Trackside with Bob Larson

Nevada State Railroad Museum
South Carson Street
(U.S. 395) at Fairview Drive
Carson City | 775.687-6953

Monday, May 10 - 7pm
Western Pacific Centennial
Part 3

Bob Larson, railroad photographer and former Western Pacific engineer on the Feather River division, began his railroad career in the signal department of the Chicago & North Western. In 1956, he hired on with the Western Pacific and retired 30 years later (on the Western Pacific’s eastern Division in Nevada) with a perfect safety record. During that time and continuing today, Bob photographed the continuing changes of the railroad, his co-workers, and the environment that shaped his remarkable career. Bob’s extensive collection of photos have been presented in two volumes, Western Pacific Trackside with Bob Larson and Life on the Feather River Route: A Railroader’s Scrapbook Pictorial of Memories.

Now retired and splitting his time between Las Vegas and northern California, Bob entertains rail enthusiasts at historical society meetings, conventions and small gatherings with his personal recollections and samplings of his photographic record. Bob is also a frequent contributor to the Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society’s publication The Headlight. A great photographer and story teller, Bob always leaves his audiences wanting more. Don’t miss this entertaining glimpse into the life of a railroad engineer and our final segment celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Western Pacific Railroad in Nevada.

CCAI and the Carson City Library are proud to announce "Books & Writers," a new collaborative program highlighting literary arts. The program launches with a workshop and reading by the New York Times bestselling author and Carson City resident Ellen Hopkins.

Ms. Hopkins, 2010 Nevada Governor's Arts Award recipient, is the author of Crank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks and Fallout

Blogger SimeyC writes about Crank: "This is one of the most powerful and emotive books I have ever read. You don’t quite feel fulfilled after it, but this is OK – it’s written in a way to make you question, to make you realize things aren’t black and white, and it is so compelling that it will draw you in again and again – I’ve read it several times, and I still find something new to think about, something else that really strikes a chord in my heart and soul."

The events are free. The public is cordially invited! Seating is limited; the doors will open a half hour early.

Save the dates!
Additional Books & Writers events include:

*** a reading on Tuesday, May 4 [6:30–7:30pm], and a workshop on Thursday, May 13, [3:30–4:30pm] by WNC professor Ursula Carlson, author of Trails of Historic New Mexico: Routes Used By Indian, Spanish, and American Travelers Through 1886.

*** a writing workshop on Tuesday, May 11 [3:30– 4:30pm], and a reading on Saturday, May 15 [1–2pm] by Carson City native Heidi Ayarbe, author of Freeze Frame and Compromised.

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero

Nevada Museum of Art
160 West Liberty Street
Reno

May 1, 2010 - July 25

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero

"Alternately wry and deeply emotional, Colombian artist Fernando Botero blends beauty, violence, tradition, and modernity in his effort to convey the glories and miseries of contemporary life, particularly in Latin America. With 100 paintings, drawings, and sculptures drawn from the artist's private collection the exhibition examines Botero's indebtedness to European artists such as 19th century French painters Dominique Ingres and Eugene Delacroix and Italian Renaissance artists Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca. It also acknowledges his interest in Mexican artists Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and José Clemente Orozco and the great Spanish painter Diego Velazquez. In his earlier works from the 1950s, Botero's struggle to define his own style is still evident, but eventually the artist's mature style in the form of enlarged volumes and distinctive, buoyant figures emerges. The Baroque World of Fernando Botero offers insight into the artist's many worlds: be it his role as a social critic, re-interpreter, cultural force, or product of the artists who preceded him.

You likely noticed, but just in case: CCAI now sports a banner that stretches across Carson Street in the days preceding Nevada Neighbors presentations and Courthouse Gallery exhibitions. This new public information initiative is made possible though a generous grant from the Robert Z.Hawkins Foundation.

Look for us on the street and in the sky!
