"Honoring the Horse"

"Handler caring for Gene Autry's horse, Champion"

"Honoring the Horse"

Matthewson-IGT Knowledge Center
University of Nevada Reno
1664 N Virginia Street
Reno

"The “Honoring the Horse” exhibit will not only include “glamour shots” and posters of horses from the movies, but will also highlight the major roles that horses have played in Nevada’s mining, farming, ranching, transportation and tourism industries. Additionally, it will illustrate the sometimes-conflicting interests and views surrounding the treatment and desired fate of Nevada’s wild horses.
Materials on display will include film and audio recordings of Reno’s Wild Horse Annie (Velma Johnson), who successfully advocated for passage of the first federal legislation protecting wild horses and burros from inhumane treatment. This September marks the 51st anniversary of the passage of the Wild Horse Annie Act. Helping Annie to make her case in Washington D.C. were Gus Bundy’s powerful photos of wild horse round-ups, which will alsobe featured at the exhibit."
Through March, 2011

Artist Talk and Reception

Nevada Arts Council
716 N. Carson Street, Suite A
Carson City

"The Nevada Arts Council features “Kiddo,” an exhibit by Bryan Christiansen, in its Carson City office through November 26 as part of the Office eXhibition Series (OXS). An artist talk and reception will be held Thursday, October 21 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Christiansen’s works are re-creations and deconstructions composed from found couches, armchairs, tables, mattresses and bed frames. Hunting the surrounding area for abandoned furniture, he reconstructs his finds into animals or deconstructs to create various “trophies” including “antler mounts” and stretched furniture “pelts.”

A South Dakota native, Christiansen attended the University of Nevada, Reno, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2009. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the area, and has been recognized with a Sierra Arts Student Endowment Grant, “Best in Show” at the 2009 UNR Student Exhibition, and a FY 2011 NAC Artist Fellowship Honorable Mention Award. A featured artist in the Stremmel Gallery’s Emerging Artists group exhibition, Christiansen launched Nevada Museum of Art’s Nevada Emerging Artists Series with his first solo exhibit in the summer of 2010."

Gaylen Hansen: Paintings From the Palouse &
Larry Williamson: New Works

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 21|5:30-7:30pm

Stremmel Gallery
1400 South Virginia Street
Reno

Stremmel Gallery: Gaylen Hansen & Larry Williamson

"Living in Eastern Washington, 89-year-old Gaylen Hansen has been transforming the gentle landscape of the Palouse into tall tales and mythical quests through narrative painting for the last forty years. Using landscapes, animals, insects, and his alter ego,"the Kernal", Hansen depicts a world that is “variously mysterious, dangerous, surprising and comical”... Nevada based sculptor, Larry Williamson, draws inspiration from the desert landscape that has surrounded him his whole life, carving and creating extraordinary images out of aged pieces of wood that he finds lying on the floor of the Great Basin. His sculptures range from small to life-sized, demonstrating the natural evolution of images from his mind and materials."

Through November 18

Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies

Tuesday, October 5
5:30 p.m

Carson City Library
900 N. Roop Street
Carson City

Film:

Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies

Below, from the PBS Nature website:

"... the compelling story of a remarkable denizen of the West in "Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies."

America’s wild horses lead an exhilarating but perilous existence. The climate can be brutal, mountain lions and other predators stalk the young, and their dependence on public grazing lands for sustenance often puts them in competition with livestock interests. In some places where these magnificent animals roam, it is not unusual for a wild horse to fall victim to an illegal horse shooter.

Against this backdrop, NATURE presents Cloud’s story. Filmed in the mountains of Montana, this poignant, engrossing chronicle focuses on an extraordinary stallion, whose life has been recorded since his birth in the wild in 1995 by Emmy-winning filmmaker Ginger Kathrens."

Every distance is not near

UNR School of the Arts Art Department
Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery
Church Fine Arts Building
1664 N. Virginia Street
Reno

October 4 - November 5
Every distance is not near

"This exhibition features three artists from Seattle: Debra Baxter, Dawn Cerny and Jenny Heishman, who concentrate on sculpture based in historical and narrative elements. The structure will be an untraditional, three-person arrangement as the artists are invited to create a unique exhibition based both on their own works and in collaboration with each other. The title of the exhibition Every distance is not near, the only element directed by Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, is a Bob Dylan song “I Shall Be Released,” as sung by Nina Simone. How the artists interpret this theme will be part of the excitement of the show’s development."

Gallery hours: M–F 11 am – 5 pm
