Reiterate the Repeat: Sky Kim and Keun Young Park

Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery
Art Department
University of Nevada, Reno
1664 N. Virginia St
Reno

Reiterate the Repeat
August 29 - September 23

Please note the two public events for this exhibition:
Thursday, September 22, 5:30pm: Closing Lecture by Keun Young Park. Please note the change of venue: Lecture will be given in Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Wells Fargo Auditorium, Rm 124. Following the artist's talk, the closing reception will take place in Sheppard Gallery, Church Fine Arts, 6:30 - 8pm.
Thursday, September 11, new location for the lecture: Opening Lecture with Sky Kim, Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Room 124 (Ground Floor), followed by a reception in Sheppard Gallery, 6:30 - 8pm

Both living in Jersey City, New Jersey but formally unknown to each other, Sky Kim and Keun Young Park create their artwork through very time-consuming and repetitive manners. This exhibition will consider how an image is created from this approach to artmaking. Park constructs “micro-collages” made from tiny pieces of torn up photographs punctured by a pin, while Kim creates large-scale scrolls by making thousands of marks, rendering voluptuous drawings in a variety of media. Please join us for the exhibition and to hear the artists discuss their work; this exhibition will have two artist lectures, one by each artist, at the beginning and closing of the show.

Sky Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and received a Master’s Degree in Painting at Pratt Institute. She is a recipient of the National Museum of Contemporary Art’s National Korean Art Competition Awards and a Pratt Institute Art Grant.

Keun Young Park was born in Seoul, South Korea, where she received her BFA and MFA Degrees in Sculpture at Seoul National University. Her awards include being an A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship and Exhibition Recipient; the winner of Curator’s Choice - a competition for the ‘Artist Talk on Art’ organization; and the Juror’s award at ‘Small Works’ – an international competition at NYU gallery.

Gallery Hours: Monday - Thursday, 11am - 5pm, Friday, 11am - 2pm

Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada

University of Nevada Reno
Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
1664 N. Virginia Street
Reno

The University of Nevada Reno's Knowledge Center presents, Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada, an exhibition of work by local artists who experimented with art styles and lifestyles out of Nevada’s mainstream. While many Nevadans were settling into cozy, traditional “apple-pie” American lifestyles after World War II, a tight-knit group of artists were producing colorful, nontraditional art, and living lifestyles that matched. For the first time, the work of this talented group is presented together, at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno through September 16.

Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada contains the work by 16 of these artists who often gathered in Virginia City, as well as took classes and encouraged one another at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The featured artists include Zoray Andrus, Betty Bliss, Nancy Bowers, Gus Bundy, Robert Cole Caples, Ben Cunningham, Joanne de Longchamps, Robert Hartman, Ruth Hilts, Craig Sheppard, Yolande Sheppard, Louis Siegriest, Adine Stix, Marge Tanner, Richard Guy Walton, and Ed Yates.

University Professor of Art Emeritus Jim McCormick and Christopher Schwartz, an accomplished student intern, co-curated the show and published a 44-page catalog about northern Nevada’s post-war art community. It is the first time that the artists have been featured together in one publication. The catalog is available free at the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public through September 16: Monday through Thursday, 7:30am – 8pm; Friday 7:30am – 5pm, Saturday-Sunday 1 – 5pm. Some select pieces are available for viewing only in the Special Collections Department on the Third Floor, 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday.

For more information, please contact the University of Nevada, Reno Special Collections Department at 775-682-5665 or specoll@unr.edu.

Buster Blue: Live at BAC

Brewery Arts Center
449 West King Street
Carson City

You are invited to help make Buster Blue's DVD: “Live Performance at the BAC.”

Enjoy an evening of great music when Buster Blue takes the stage in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall on Saturday, August 27th, 8pm. The Reno-based band’s unique style of Americana Folk challenges the notion everything musical has been done before because Buster Blue has found a place inhabited only by their own off-kilter creation. The five members utilize an arsenal of instruments that include horns, banjo, accordion, chains, and a well placed bucket. Their intention to revisit the American musical roots tradition may have much to do with their upbringing in Gardnerville. Buster Blue’s musical educations range from one member being drum major of the high school band to another being a screamer in a hardcore group. Their diverse backgrounds and upbringings help give color to their music, as well as make it difficult to pigeonhole them to a genre.

Tickets: $15.00 General Admission, $13.00 Students and Seniors, $10.00 BAC Members.

…But Then, She’s Betty Carter
A film by Michelle Parkerson
This lively film is an unforgettable portrait of legendary vocalist Betty Carter, one of the greatest living exponents of jazz. Uncompromised by commercialism throughout her long career, she has forged alternative criteria for success — including founding her own recording company and raising her two sons as a single parent. Parkerson’s special film captures Carter’s musical genius, her paradoxical relationship with the public and her fierce dedication to personal and artistic independence.

Friday, August 5, 8pm
Divorce Iranian Style
A film by Kim Longinotto and Ziba Mir-Hosseini
England, 1998, 80 minutes, Color
Hilarious, tragic, stirring, this fly-on-the-wall look at several weeks in an Iranian divorce court provides a unique window into the intimate circumstances of Iranian women’s lives. Following Jamileh, whose husband beats her; Ziba, a 16-year-old trying to divorce her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam, who is desperately fighting to gain custody of her daughters, this deadpan chronicle showcases the strength, ingenuity, and guile with which they confront biased laws, a Kafaka-esque administrative system, and their husbands’ and families’ rage to gain divorces.

Friday, August 12, 8pm
Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go
A film by Kim Longinotto
UK, 2007, 100 minutes, Color
Harrowing at one moment and heartwarming the next, Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go is set at England’s Mulberry Bush School, founded by Barbara Dockar-Drysdale who developed unique methods for working with children suffering through severe emotional trauma.

Friday, August 19, 7:30pm
Short Video Contest Showing and Awards
and at 8pm Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business
A film by Helena Solberg and David Meyer
USA/Brazil, 1995, 92 minutes, Color, Subtitled
This fascinating film skillfully combines reenactments, interviews with confidants and commentators, and footage from her many films to tell the haunting story of 1940’s superstar Carmen Miranda. Charting Miranda’s transformation from famed Brazilian singer to Hollywood’s first Latina star to independent artist, award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Helena Solberg shows how Miranda’s saga exemplifies contradictions in the relationship between Latin America and the United States that persist today. At the convergence of sexual politics, cultural colonialism, and one woman’s life, this moving film powerfully explores the complex factors behind the image and life of the “Tutti-Frutti Woman,” Carmen Miranda.

Thursday, Aug 25, 8pm
Mary Lou Williams Music on My Mind
A film by Joanne Burke
Pioneering Black American composer-arranger-pianist Mary Lou Williams is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of jazz. In this authoritative film, lively interviews with Williams, Dizzy Gillepsie and Buddy Tate interweave the musical and personal elements of her dramatic life. At the height of her career, she dropped out of music to help drug-addicted musicians in Harlem, making a triumphant comeback fifteen years later. A spirited tribute to Williams’ indelible contribution to American culture, narrated by Roberta Flack.
