The University of Nevada, Reno and The Autism Coalition of Nevada are honored to present an evening with Temple Grandin. As an adult with Asperger's Syndrome, Temple has lectured around the world regarding autism and early intervention. She is the inventor of a hug machine (based on her own experiences) designed to produce a calming effect on persons with hypersensitivity to sensory information.

She is also a renowned designer of humane livestock handling equipment in use in approximately half of the cattle facilities in North America. She is currently a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University.

A best-selling author, Temple has been recognized as a leader in both the animal welfare and autism advocacy movements. She is listed in the 2010 Time 100 list as one of the most influential people in the world in the "Heroes" category.

Additional seating will be available in the Wells Fargo Auditorium, located on the first floor of the Knowledge Center, where a live feed of Temple Grandin will be streamed.

Reno Wild Fire

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] sends its best wishes to everyone impacted by the wind-driven wild fire that began early Friday and raged across southwest Reno forcing over 10,000 people to evacuate from their homes. The fire storm burned nearly 2000 acres and destroyed 29 homes.

Extensive lists of opportunities for help to the families impacted by the fire may be found online by searching for "reno fire donations".

Jennifer Lauck: Found: A Memoir

Due to the Reno fire, Jennifer Lauck's reading with the Carson City Library has been postponed to 2012. Watch the Library's website and the CCAI blog for the rescheduled date.

In recognition of National Adoption Month, Carson City Library will host author Jennifer Lauck on Friday, November 18, 6pm, at the Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC], 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City.

Jennifer Lauck is the New York Times bestselling author of Blackbird, now translated into 22 languages and published in 29 countries. Lauck has also written Still Waters, Show Me the Way, and Found, released earlier this year and considered the true sequel to Blackbird. Her personal journey began in Carson City and is about perseverance, courage, and the remarkable capacity of humans to transcend the worst of losses with grace. In Found, Lauck reunites with her birthmother, who lived in Reno. Lauck writes of the complex journey home to her original family and the impact her adoption has had on her life.

Lauck is an award winning investigative reporter and earned her MFA in creative writing from Pacific Lutheran University. She lives in Portland, Oregon, is the mother of two children, and runs a writing program for burgeoning memoir writers. For more information, visit www.jenniferlauck.com

The Nevada Arts Council presents the Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground exhibition in its OXS Gallery thorough December 2. A reception for the artists and talk by printmaker, Sharon Tetly, will take place November 17, 4:30 - 6:30pm. OXS is open to the public 8am - 5pm, M - F.

The exhibition features sixteen artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada. The assembly of printmakers, eight from the north and eight from the south, produced collaborative prints that visually explored connections and disconnections between southern and northern Nevada cultural attitudes, aesthetics, and geographical distinctions.

Nevada’s art communities are not separated by distance of travel alone. There are notable differences among artists throughout the state in what is important in their work, most of which connects with where they live. This traversal of Nevada has also led to improved communication between artists in Reno, Las Vegas, and artists living Nevada's remote outback.

The collaborating artist teams include: Maria Arango, Las Vegas and Lynn Schmidt, Reno; Erik Beehn, Las Vegas and Nolan Preece, Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell, Las Vegas and Galen Brown, Carson City; Daryl DePry, Las Vegas and Sharon Tetly, Carson City; Keith Conley, LasVegas and Sidne Teske, Tuscarora; Anne M. Author Kevin Canty will give a reading from his recent works at the Oats Park Art Center. Canty's seventh book, Everything, a novel, was published in 2010. His short stories have appeared in the New Yorker, Esquire, GQ, Story, the New England Review and elsewhere; essays and articles in Vogue, Details, Playboy, the New York Times and the Oxford American, among many others. He lives and writes in Missoula, Montana, where he teaches in the University of Montana's MFA program.

Mick Sheldon’s exhibition, Still Lifes for Cowpokes, continues at the Capital City Arts Initiative's [CCAI] Courthouse Gallery through Friday, January 6. The gallery is open to the public M-F, 9am - 5pm.

The exhibition features still life paintings by artist Mick Sheldon, a Reno native and UNR alum. Still life paintings with commonplace objects as subjects are an art tradition that goes back millennia. This exhibition’s paintings grew out of an assignment the artist gave to his students and to himself as well: paint a still life. “The gourds, the skulls, the thick rope, the student-made lopsided pots and bottles, the cactus, the bullet-riddled cans, the broken glass, and especially the cloth kept tumbling around and over each other” revealed themselves to be players in the rodeos and cowboy western movies he remembered from his youth: skulls as the cowboys, cacti as the pine trees, desk lamps as the light source.

Sheldon earned a MFA degree in painting from the University of California at Davis in 1992. In 2004, he began teaching at American River College where he is now tenured and serves as Director of the James Kaneko Gallery. Sheldon lives with his wife in Yolo, California.

CCAI commissioned Phoebe Finch to write the exhibition essay, A Hybrid of the Brash and the Curious, for Still Lifes for Cowpokes. Ms. Finch is a senior at UNR studying both art history and Spanish.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is delighted to produce The Phantom of the Opera. The northern Nevada premiere of Broadway's longest running show and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece features the haunting, rapturous music that has delighted audiences for more than a decade including Music of the Night, Prima Donna, Angel of Music, All I Ask of You, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Point of No Return.

Mark Williams performs as the Phantom and Maria Arrigotti as Christine. Other leads include Emzy Burroughs as Raoul, Jen Coogan as Carlotta, Teddy Medlyn as Piangi, Nick Favero as Andre, Jim DeZerga as Firmin, Christina Bourne as Madame Giry, and Danita Bayer as Meg.

"It will be, by far, the most vocally and technically demanding show WNMTC has ever produced," said Stephanie Arrigotti, who has produced 86 shows for the company. "I've been working with technicians and set builders - it has taken us a whole year to build this production."

As part of its Books & Writers series, CCAI will present a literary reading by writer Tracy McQuay on Friday, November 4, 7pm at the Carson City Library. Tracy will also conduct a writing workshop at the Library on Saturday, November 5 from 11am – noon. Both events are free and open to the public.

Tracy McQuay teaches first grade at Mark Twain Elementary School in Carson City where, for the past seven years, she developed and facilitated an after-school poetry program for the school's students. Her current work received a 2011 Artists Fellowship Honorable Mention from the Nevada Arts Council. She is a recent graduate of Lesley University where she earned a MA in Integrating Arts into Education. Her writing has appeared in several literary journals and she published a story in "Chicken Soup for the Christmas Soul" in 2008. She is a member of Ash Canyon Poets, GCW (a women's critique group), and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

The Carson City Library co-sponsors the Books & Writers series with CCAI.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] and the Carson City Library are delighted to present Art in the BRIC II, a group exhibition of art work by northern Nevada artists and architects. A reception for the artists will be held at the Carson City’s Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC] Wednesday, November 2, 4:30 - 6pm, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The reception is free and the public is cordially invited.

Gallery visitors will find the artworks throughout the BRIC's first floor offices and conference rooms. To enable to public ample opportunity to view the artists' work, the exhibition will run through August 2012.

The artists and architects in this group show include photography by Mike Bates, ceramics by Jill Brugler, prints by Susan Kotler, all from Carson City; sculpture by Bryan Christiansen from Reno; drawings by H+K Architects of Reno; painting by Jean LeGassick and Jeff Nicholson, both from Silver City; and a printmaking/photography installation by Nancy Raven from Minden.

As part of Art in the BRIC II, the Carson City Library presents the architectural renderings for the new Carson City Knowledge + Discovery Center created by H+K Architects of Reno. Among its recent major accomplishments, the firm has created the designs for UNR's Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center and WNC's Joe Dini, Jr. Library and Student Center.

Giacomo Fiore brings his exciting guitar skills to the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday, October 29 at 2pm. The performance is part of the Brewery Art Center’s Classical Performance Series and is presented in collaboration with the Sierra Nevada Guitar Society.

The Italian born musician will perform both traditional and modern works to create a magical musical experience. Fiore is an imaginative and accomplished guitar player who is comfortable in a wide variety of styles. His music making has both flair and depth.

A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory and Belmont University, Fiore has performed across the U.S. and around the world. Today Giacomo is continuing his musical explorations as a Ph.D. student in Musicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he focuses on the development of alternative guitar repertoires in just and microtonal tunings.

Mick Sheldon's talk, Gone 30 Years But Still a Nevadan, is another in the Nevada Neighbors series of public talks presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] on contemporary art practice. Mick will speak at the Carson City Library Wednesday, October 26 at 7 pm; an informal reception for the artist will begin at 6:15pm. The reception and talk are free and the public is cordially invited.

Mick's talk is a companion piece to his exhibition, Still Lifes for Cowpokes, at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St, Carson City. The exhibition closes Friday, January 6, 2012.

Mick Sheldon, a tenured professor at American River College in Sacramento and a working artist for most of his adult life, will discuss his unique approach to creating and composing artworks of various mediums and styles: sculpture, oil painting and woodblocks. His talk, with a generous dose of his idiosyncratic humor, will center on how he vigorously approaches his art on a daily basis, driven by his appreciation of contemporary life in the West. Mick’s work embodies a synthesis of formal and expressive styles that assemble figures, light, color and space qualities that celebrate the heroic energy of our region.

Mick is a Reno native and UNR alumnus. He earned a MFA degree in painting from the University of California at Davis in 1992. After working a series of “dead end jobs,” he started teaching at two schools and a prison back in the late eighties. The Comstock Residents Association will present Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks! The uniquely talented musical maestro was a member of the Charlatans, who pioneered the music of the 1960's in Virginia City on the stage at the Red Dog Saloon. For one night only, on Saturday, October 22 at 7 pm, Dan Hicks will headline a show at the grandest venue on the Comstock Lode, Piper's Opera House.

Dan took a special interest when he heard of the threat from open pit mining that looms over the Comstock Historic District. The fundraising concert will help benefit the Comstock Residents Association and create awareness of the Comstock's plight.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Advance tickets are available online at www.comstockresidents.org/hicksville.html. For the past two years, Phyllis Shafer has explored, through plein air painting, the landscape of northern Nevada. The Nevada State Museum is bringing wildlife artist Roy Purcell from Tucson, Arizona to celebrate Nevada’s Great Outdoors, the theme of this year's Nevada Day parade. Mr. Purcell will give a talk on Thursday, October 27, 6-8 pm as part of the Museum's monthly Frances Humphrey lecture series which is held the 4th Thursday of each month.

Doors open at 6 pm for the book signing. Admission is free for museum members and children 17 and under; tickets for non-member adults are $8 each. The Carson City Symphony opens its 28th season with an American Journey concert featuring guest soloist saxophonist Rhett Bender and compositions by American composers Paul Creston, Robert Russell Bennett, and Robert W. Smith.

Mr. Bender is a Professor of Music at Southern Oregon University, Director of the Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop and the Ashland Chamber Music Workshop, and Region 1 Director of the North American Saxophone Alliance. He performs throughout the U.S. and China, and teaches each year at the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu. He directs the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra, and plays soprano saxophone in the Globe Saxophone Quartet. Bender's live performances have been broadcast over several radio stations and he is featured saxophonist on the CD set "America's Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax" and on solo saxophone CDs "Transformations" and "Meldings."

Tickets: $15 general admission; $12 - seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; free for youth age 16 and under. CCAI will present a poetry workshop and a reading by poet Gailmarie Pahmeier on Thursday, October 13 at the Carson City Library The writing workshop takes place from 4 - 5pm; the poetry reading begins at 7pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Gailmarie Pahmeier, a Nevadan for 30 years, teaches creative writing and contemporary literature at the University of Nevada, Reno where she has been honored with the Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award and the University Distinguished Teacher Award.

Ms Pahmeier’s work has been widely published in literary journals and anthologies, including Booth, Passager, Interim, Mudfish, New Poets of the AmericanWest (for which she won the Editor’s Choice Award), Literary Nevada, and the Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary Poetry. Her poetry collection includes The House on Breakaheart Road, and two chapbooks from Black Rock Press. Her recent chapbook, Shake It and It Snows, won the 2009 Coal Hill Chapbook Award; poems from this collection were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. Her literary awards include a Witter Bynner Poetry Fellowship and two Artists Fellowships from the Nevada Arts Council. In 2007, she received the Nevada Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.

She said, “I’ve read my work locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. I’m particularly interested in conducting workshops and giving readings in “under-served” communities, wherever they might be or think they are. I love Nevada, love getting out and into our various communities. My material comes from interactions and observations I make while out on the road, and I learn as much or more from community workshop participants as they might learn from me.”

Jackpot Grants
Quarterly grants available through the Grants Program, Jackpot Grants support new or exemplary art projects by nonprofit arts and non-arts organizations, public institutions and artists. Artists must have attained a certain level of proficiency as represented in the quality of work samples submitted with the applications. Emerging Animation is another in CCAI's Nevada Neighbors series of stimulating public talks on contemporary art practice. Mark Chavez, an early adopter in computer animation and a leading animation industry expert, will present an overview of emerging animation technology and its artistic and cultural impact. The talk will take place at the Carson City Library Wednesday, September 28 at 7pm; a reception for the artist will precede the talk at 6:15pm. Nevada Neighbors events are free and the public is cordially invited.

Mark Chavez, a MFA graduate from UCLA in the 1980’s, has worked for more than 25 years creating cutting-edge animation techniques and live-action visual effects for many major feature films, console games, television commercials, experimental digital film making and interactive media. He is a leader in the digital animation industry, both as an artist animator and a modeler, creating photo-realistic props, sets, characters for live-action feature films and character animation fantasies for major film production studios such as DreamWorks Feature Animation and Rhythm, Hues Studios Los Angeles, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Brothers Pictures. He has contributed to the development of large-scale projected laser animation for concert venues and pioneered emergent interactive media, motion picture graphics and motion capture for the Tokyo Broadcast System and Acclaim, Inc. In 2004, Mark was recruited to be a founding faculty member in the newly established Nanyang Technology University’s (NTU) School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) in Singapore.

Thursday, September 22, 5:30pm: exhibition closing lecture by Keun Young Park in Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Wells Fargo Auditorium, room 124. The closing reception will be in Sheppard Gallery, Church Fine Arts, 6:30 - 8pm.

Both living in Jersey City, New Jersey but previously unknown to each other, Sky Kim and Keun Young Park create their artwork through very time-consuming and repetitive manners. This exhibition considers images created from this approach to artmaking. Park constructs “micro-collages” made from tiny pieces of torn up photographs punctured by a pin, while Kim creates large-scale scrolls by making thousands of marks, rendering voluptuous drawings in a variety of media.

An exhibition of current work by University of Nevada Reno MFA candidates Amerique Powell and Manuel Alfaro is at the University of Phoenix Gallery through November 16. Sierra Arts in Reno manages the gallery.

Manuel Alfaro said that "The inspiration for my work comes from Aztec culture and the current drug war in Mexico. Researching Aztec culture has led me into a complex world of religion and mythology, a world of deity lords and gods."

Amerique Powell said that "This body of work is the result of an exploration of the emotional connection I have with my pets, and my fascination with and attraction to decorative pattern. By merging the animals and patterns, my goal is to give them equal weight, both formally and conceptually, so that neither one is the obvious 'subject.'" Ms. Powell is on the CCAI Artists In Education Roster and teaching CCAI art workshops this fall for students at Carson Middle School, Carson City.

The Capital City Arts Initiative opens Mick Sheldon’s exhibition, Still Lifes for Cowpokes at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery on Friday, September 16 with a reception for the artist from 5 - 7pm. The exhibition and reception are free and the public is cordially invited.

The exhibition features still life paintings by artist Mick Sheldon, a Reno native and UNR alum. Still life paintings with commonplace objects as subjects are an art tradition that goes back millennia. This exhibition’s paintings grew out of an assignment the artist gave to his students and to himself as well: paint a still life. “The gourds, the skulls, the thick rope, the student-made lopsided pots and bottles, the cactus, the bullet-riddled cans, the broken glass, and especially the cloth kept tumbling around and over each other” revealed themselves to be players in the rodeos and cowboy western movies he remembered from his youth: skulls as the cowboys, cacti as the pine trees, desk lamps as the light source.

Sheldon earned a MFA degree in painting from the University of California at Davis in 1992. After working a series of “dead end jobs,” he started teaching at two schools and a prison back in the late eighties. In 2004, he began teaching as a full-time professor at American River College where he is now tenured and serves as Director of the James Kaneko Gallery. Sheldon lives with his wife in Yolo, California.

CCAI has commissioned Phoebe Finch to write the exhibition essay for Still Lifes for Cowpokes. Ms. Finch is a senior at UNR studying both art history and Spanish.

The Culture of Burning Man Exhibition at WNC

Each Labor Day holiday, northern Nevada plays host to one of the largest and most innovative art and cultural events in the nation. Western Nevada College offers a fascinating glimpse into the Burning Man culture of self-expression and self-reliance through a photography exhibit that portrays the art, costumes and ambience of the event. The Culture of Burning Man, in the gallery through October 15, was curated by local artist Maria Partridge. The Black Rock Arts Foundation provided exhibition support.

The thirty-nine poster size photographs depict the innovative sculptures that soar above the playa and depict "burners" in costumes that range from the clever to the weird. The show also features a fascinating array of playa vehicles built or retrofitted to navigate the dusty streets of Black Rock City – from unicycles and roller skates to giant balloons and boats.

The College Gallery is in the Bristlecone Building, at WNC Carson City. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8am - 9pm, and Saturday, 8am - 5pm, excluding holidays. Admission is free.

Stremmel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent painting and sculpture by John Randall Nelson and Bryan Christiansen. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday, September 8 from 5:30 - 7:30pm and will remain in the gallery through October 8, 2011.

John Randall Nelson emerged in the mid-’90s as a painter and sculptor known for taking simple, bold, instantly recognizable images of everyday symbols and imbuing them with a sense of theatre. Embracing the concept of artist as storyteller, Nelson is a chronicler of contemporary culture, his symbolic amalgamations forming an intuitive sense of the besieged, “over communicated, how-to” society in which we live. His paintings often consist of a central image superimposed over a collage of symbols and text (anything from art criticism to nursery rhymes). Daily life is represented through select bits and pieces carefully plucked, placed, layered, painted, sanded and repainted. Nelson’s persistent, almost obsessive editing and rearrangement of these pieces allow viewers to uncover the grammar of his private language. Through the constant reworking of the surface and the rearranging of form, the process of discovery and creation comes to the forefront of Nelson’s canvases. His paintings are narrative in two ways: They encourage viewers to invent their own stories based on the images and messages used, but they also present the “story” of their own creation, inviting the experience of a restless and somewhat anxious journey of the art-making process.

Bryan Christiansen creates life-sized contemporary sculpture that challenges conventional notions of rural life, home, the rituals of the hunting tradition, and the innocence of childhood. Discarded household furniture found in neglected urban areas becomes assemblage that stands in for the trophies, antler mounts, and pelts often prized by hunters. Christiansen's work recalls the gritty, discarded object sculpture of 1950s assemblage artists Bruce Conner and Ed Kienholz. However, unlike these artists interested in probing the passage of time, death, and decay,
Christiansen reconstructs exquisitely crafted works that feature exposed hand-stitchery and floral fabrics. This process of assembling has more to do with making sense of life than decoding death. Christiansen's sculptures take the form of trophies, physical triumphs of the present over the past and the strength to confront some of life's most challenging contradictions. Raised in a small log cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota, his childhood was influenced by activities associated with rustic, agrarian living: absorbing nature, communing with wildlife, and learning to hunt. These activities, alongside the turbulent and complex development of his family's domestic life, are what led Christiansen to art as a way of wrestling with the conflicting realities of his past.

The Hutchison Studio’s XXL Variation III kaleidoscope has eight 28” diameter interchangeable wheels. The Hutchisons created the brilliantly colored wheels using a variety of glass techniques including stained, etching, foiled fused, blown tube glass, tack-fused glass, full flat fused glass, plus flower transparencies and glass jewels.

Both living in Jersey City, New Jersey but formally unknown to each other, Sky Kim and Keun Young Park create their artwork through very time-consuming and repetitive manners. This exhibition will consider how an image is created from this approach to artmaking. Park constructs “micro-collages” made from tiny pieces of torn up photographs punctured by a pin, while Kim creates large-scale scrolls by making thousands of marks, rendering voluptuous drawings in a variety of media. Please join us for the exhibition and to hear the artists discuss their work; this exhibition will have two artist lectures, one by each artist, at the beginning and closing of the show.

Sky Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and received a Master’s Degree in Painting at Pratt Institute. She is a recipient of the National Museum of Contemporary Art’s National Korean Art Competition Awards and a Pratt Institute Art Grant.

Keun Young Park was born in Seoul, South Korea, where she received her BFA and MFA Degrees in Sculpture at Seoul National University. Her awards include being an A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship and Exhibition Recipient; the winner of Curator’s Choice - a competition for the ‘Artist Talk on Art’ organization; and the Juror’s award at ‘Small Works’ – an international competition at NYU gallery.

The University of Nevada Reno's Knowledge Center presents, Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada, an exhibition of work by local artists who experimented with art styles and lifestyles out of Nevada’s mainstream. While many Nevadans were settling into cozy, traditional “apple-pie” American lifestyles after World War II, a tight-knit group of artists were producing colorful, nontraditional art, and living lifestyles that matched. For the first time, the work of this talented group is presented together, at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno through September 16.

Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada contains the work by 16 of these artists who often gathered in Virginia City, as well as took classes and encouraged one another at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The featured artists include Zoray Andrus, Betty Bliss, Nancy Bowers, Gus Bundy, Robert Cole Caples, Ben Cunningham, Joanne de Longchamps, Robert Hartman, Ruth Hilts, Craig Sheppard, Yolande Sheppard, Louis Siegriest, Adine Stix, Marge Tanner, Richard Guy Walton, and Ed Yates.

University Professor of Art Emeritus Jim McCormick and Christopher Schwartz, an accomplished student intern, co-curated the show and published a 44-page catalog about northern Nevada’s post-war art community. It is the first time that the artists have been featured together in one publication. The catalog is available free at the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public through September 16: Monday through Thursday, 7:30am – 8pm; Friday 7:30am – 5pm, Saturday-Sunday 1 – 5pm. Some select pieces are available for viewing only in the Special Collections Department on the Third Floor, 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday.

Enjoy an evening of great music when Buster Blue takes the stage in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall on Saturday, August 27th, 8pm. The Reno-based band’s unique style of Americana Folk challenges the notion everything musical has been done before because Buster Blue has found a place inhabited only by their own off-kilter creation. The five members utilize an arsenal of instruments that include horns, banjo, accordion, chains, and a well placed bucket. Their intention to revisit the American musical roots tradition may have much to do with their upbringing in Gardnerville. Buster Blue’s musical educations range from one member being drum major of the high school band to another being a screamer in a hardcore group. Their diverse backgrounds and upbringings help give color to their music, as well as make it difficult to pigeonhole them to a genre.

August is Jazz Month in Carson City

The summer sizzles as Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers proudly continue the annual August jazz festival started in 2004. This year, performances will be held at multiple venues in Carson City, and will feature about 60 performances, and more than 100 musicians in over 20 bands. Main events are scheduled for August 19-21, with lead-in performances starting July 31. All events are free, except for a ticketed event at the Bliss Mansion on August 13. Since last fall, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] has presented Art in the BRIC I, a group exhibition by northern artists in the City's Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC]. The Hutchison Studio’s XXL Variation III kaleidoscope has eight 28” diameter interchangeable wheels; the photo to the right shows William changing a wheel. The Hutchisons created the brilliantly colored wheels using a variety of glass techniques including stained, etching, foiled fused, blown tube glass, tack-fused glass, full flat fused glass, plus flower transparencies and glass jewels.

The Brewery Arts Center [BAC] launches its Classical Performance Series with a performance by Arina Burceva. The Ukrainian born musician is a popular performer at musical events around the world. Ms. Burceva is actively involved in composing her own repertoire for the guitar. Inspired by nature, art, literature, poetry and mythology, her musical style reflects elements of Jazz, Classical, Baroque, and Impressionism. BAC's beautifully restored ballroom is the perfect setting for her music.

Ms. Burceva began playing guitar at 8 years old. By the time she was a young teen she was already an accomplished musician and went on to study music as well as English and Art History in college.

Screen Shot represents Joseph DeLappe’s ongoing work to engage “First Person Shooter” (FPS) computer games as arenas for creative, political, and hacktivistic performative interventions. The artist’s fallen avatar, as recorded during his interventionist project “dead-in-iraq”, taking place within the U.S. Defense Department funded America’s Army recruiting game, is realized here as finely rendered graphite drawings. The hands of a Taliban fighter, as depicted in the controversial Medal of Honor shooter game, lay on the gallery floor - made real via a complex process of 3D data extraction and physical construction. Through these works the 24/7 global phenomena of virtually simulated contemporary warfare as “play” has been reified as images and objects of conscience.

Joseph DeLappe is a Professor of the Department of Art at the University of Nevada where he directs the Digital Media program. He is considered a pioneer of online gaming performance art. Working with electronic and new media since 1983, his work in online gaming performance and electromechanical installation have been shown throughout the United States and abroad - including exhibitions and performances in Australia, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Canada. He also directs the iraqimemorial.org project, an ongoing web based exhibition and open call for proposed memorials to the many thousand of civilian casualties from the war in Iraq. He has lectured throughout the world regarding his work, including most recently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His works have been featured in the New York Times, The Australian Morning Herald, Artweek, Art in American and in the 2010 book from Routledge entitled Joystick Soldiers The Politics of Play in Military Video Game.

The Nevada Arts Council presents The Skeletons in Our Closets Are Planning a Parade in Honor of the 2010 Census, a series of mixed media artwork by Darren Johnson through August 5 as part of the Office eXhibition Series (OXS). The gallery is open from M - F, 8 – 5 pm.

Johnson employs traditional realist techniques in unorthodox presentations to examine human interaction. While working for the US Census, Johnson witnessed a similarity between the Census process and community parades - both are communal activities involving public participation and the art of communication. Issues of trust, privacy and secrecy can develop when a person is communicating within and for the sake of a diverse civil society. The artworks in The Skeletons in Our Closets Are Planning a Parade in Honor of the 2010 Census reflect the challenges and complexities associated with these interpersonal efforts while celebrating the joy of communal activities.

Johnson received an Artist Fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council in 2010. A graduate of Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he earned his MFA from Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 2008. Now living in Las Vegas, Johnson exhibits his artwork nationally.

The documentary film, a not so still life, peers into the kaleidoscopic mind of Ginny Ruffner, an artist as beloved for her magnanimous spirit as for her evolving "visual thought experiments." Director Karen Stanton explores the full span of Ginny's fascinating journey, from her childhood in South Carolina to her emergence as a world-renowned artist. Meet the luminaries in her orbit, including Dale Chihuly, Graham Nash, and Tom Robbins. Justin Favel: COUNTYCENTER

An alumni of CCAI's recent spring exhibition, The Radiant City, Justin Favela incorporates humor and art history into this site-specific sculpture installation in the Rotunda Gallery. Borrowing from works in the public art collection at CityCenter, the artist re-imagines these objects for the employees and visitors of the Clark County Government Center. CityCenter’s permanent collection of 20th and 21st century art features works by internationally acclaimed artists. Justin Favela’s COUNTYCENTER features mixed media cardboard works that cover Maya Lin’s Silver River, Frank Stella’s Damascus Gate I, Jenny Holzer’s Las Vegas, and more; all have been appropriated and modified for the Government Center site.

Capital City Arts Initiative at Douglas High School

This spring, Douglas High School photography students participated in a six-week CCAI artist residency with Howard Goldbaum, artist and Associate Professor at UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism.

As an artist/historian/journalist, Mr. Goldbaum specializes in creating virtual reality websites focused on areas of historical interest in both Nevada and abroad. The websites integrate panoramic photography with historical documentation, and allow the viewer to interact with the location through 360° views, detailed close-ups, background information, and on-site interviews.

Students photographed and researched the antique store and bar on main street along with other historic Genoa sites including the Genoa cemetery. Ron Bommarito, owner of the antique store and long-time Genoa resident, welcomed the students to look at his impressive antique collection, and provided interesting insights during an the interview. Save the Date to meet the artist and to see the documentary film, a not so still life, about artist Ginny Ruffner, Saturday July 9 / 2 – 4 pm

Presented by the artist herself, this film explores the mind of Ginny Ruffner who is hailed for her magnanimous spirit and determination to recover from a near-fatal accident. Ruffner will answer questions following the film’s screening.

Ginny Ruffner, can't be summed up in one word, but the most commonly used term is "inspiring." A world-renown artist at the age of 39, she was involved in a near-fatal car accident, which left her in a coma for five weeks and confined to a hospital for five months. Doctors were convinced that she would never walk or talk again, but true to her indomitable spirit, Ginny Ruffner transformed a potentially tragic accident into a career of even more imaginative creations. From pop-up books, to room-sized installation pieces, to public works, Ruffner's art has blossomed and continues to expand.

Nevada Humanities presents its 2011 Nevada Humanities Chautauqua festival with the lives and times of legendary characters including Henry VIII, CoCo Chanel, painter Thomas Hart Benton, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Thomas Jefferson. Each evening's event begins with a musical performance featuring a local band. Music starts at 6:00 p.m., and Chautauqua performances begin at 7:00 p.m. There are plenty of comfortable chairs as well as a lawn area for those who prefer to sit on a blanket. Some people bring picnics while others take advantage of the excellent food offered for sale by Men Wielding Fire. Parking is plentiful and free.

Nevada Humanities Chautauqua blends the insightful depth of historical research with the fun of theatrical entertainment. The Chautauqua format is simple: a performer, in the guise of a historical figure, such as Mark Twain or Thomas Jefferson, tells “first-hand” stories about important episodes in the character’s life. After the monologue, the audience and performer engage in a lively discussion. Nevada Humanities Chautauqua was created by Nevada Humanities in Reno in 1992 and is one of the longest running Chautauqua festivals in the country. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada presents an exhibition of Nathan Sawaya's LEGO® brick sculptures from June 24 - August 19. CMNN is open daily from 10am-4:30pm.

Sawaya's sculptures take the popular LEGO® toy to new heights. The New York-based artist used nearly one million colorful LEGO pieces to create the exhibition's forty whimsical and intriguing sculptures.

Sawaya uses this common toy that almost every child has played with to the status of fine art. "The museum exhibition . . . engages the child in all of us while simultaneously illuminating sophisticated and complex concepts. Everyone can relate to the medium since it is a toy that many children have at home. But I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before," said Sawaya.

Raymond "Craig" Whitehill Exhibition at WNC

Mostly Perididdle, an exhibition of work by Carson City artist Raymond “Craig” Whitehill, is at Western Nevada College Carson City's Main Gallery in the Bristlecone Building through October 15. The gallery is open Monday-Friday 8 am-9 pm; Saturday 8 am- 5 pm. The College cordially invites the public to a reception for the artist on Thursday, September 15, 5-6:30 pm.

Remember when summertime meant lying on in the grass, staring at the sky and imagining a world of objects in the puffy clouds above? Colors and shapes became airplanes and animals, and artistic expression was born. Raymond “Craig” Whitehill offers just such a feast for the imagination in this summer’s exhibition. His colorful, clever ceramics, cartoon characters and accompanying stories are titled: Mostly Perididdle; a look around. ‘Perididdle’ is a registered trademark for Whitehill’s cartoon characters and related graphic works. It is, he says, “the place we all want to be.”

Whitehill grew up in California and later moved to the Carson City/Lake Tahoe area. He has worked as a commercial artist and architectural draftsman, but made his career as an air traffic controller. Whitehill’s art allows viewers to see bits and pieces of his diverse past experiences, in art that seeks to communicate to a broad audience. “Although there are vastly different points of view among us, it is my goal to find that thing in the library which we can share,” he said.

Whitehill’s Perididdle and Subdivision works have been shown in Denver, Seattle, and Reno.

The City of Fallon, in cooperation with the Churchill Arts Council, will present a free in-the-park concert with Plena Libre at 7:30 p.m., June 18, on the outdoor stage in Oats Park, in front of the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park Street, Fallon. The Art Center’s Bar and Galleries will be open following the performance.

Plena Libre is a twelve-member ensemble who have received four Grammy nominations and are Puerto Rico’s musical ambassadors to the world. The ensemble of virtuoso musicians are known for their high energy rhythms. They combine a swinging rhythm sections, horns, vocals and dance to create an electrifying stage presentation that is both universally appealing and deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture. Explore ancient Egyptian beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife in To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum. Featuring more than 100 objects including mummies, statuary, sarcophagi, coffins, gold jewelry, and elegantly-crafted vessels, the exhibition includes some of the greatest masterworks of Egyptian artistic heritage. The exhibition also helps to explain the process of mummification, the conduct of a funeral, and different types of tombs—answering questions at the core of the public’s fascination with ancient Egypt.

Two of the main ancient Egyptian cultural beliefs that have endured for thousands of years are a belief in the afterlife, and the view that death was an enemy that could be vanquished. To Live Forever features objects that illustrate a range of strategies the ancient Egyptians developed to defeat death, including mummification and various rituals performed in the tomb. The exhibition contains funeral equipment used by the rich, the middle class, and the poor, and also reveals what the Egyptians believed they would find in the next world. The economics of the funeral are examined, including how the poor tried to imitate the costly appearance of the grave goods of the rich in order to ensure a better place in the afterlife.

Specially-designed interpretation for this exhibition acknowledges the recent political revolution in Egypt and includes speculative conjecture from best-selling science fiction author Bruce Sterling, accompanied by an 80-foot panoramic mural depicting a possible future Egypt. In much the same way that the antiquities on display offer only traces of historical evidence helping us to understand Egypt’s past, Sterling’s contribution and the accompanying mural illustrates one of many possible outcomes for the future of this dynamic and rapidly-changing country.

Continue your journey into Egypt with "Mystery of the Nile," the full-dome film at the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center showing daily at 3pm, June 3 – September 5, 2011. Mark NeuCollins: "a thousand ways ...."

CCAI invites you to visit the Mark NeuCollins' residency exhibition at St. Mary's Art Center [SMAC] in Virginia City. Each spring, CCAI collaborates with SMAC to produce a two-week artist residency and exhibition. This year CCAI and SMAC hosted Mark NeuCollins from the Iowa heartland to experience life and art-making on the Comstock. Katie Grace McGowan wrote the exhibition essay "An Exquisite Balance" available in the gallery and soon online. The exhibition is open to the public Friday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm, through June 26.

NeuCollins' installation uses local natural materials, with a large earth mandala on the floor forming the centerpiece created from Virginia City's vivid native soils. Hanging paper made from sage brush and a gate made from branches adds to the sense of transition and ephemerality. NeuCollins said about the exhibition, "This is a meditation on the environment and our existence within it. By gathering local materials and making these materials the focus of the installation, I hope to create a sense of reverence for the beauty that surrounds us every day."

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition of Carole and William Hutchison’s XXL Variation III Kaleidoscope, at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from May 25 – September 9, 2011.

The views through the kaleidoscope will change each week as the artists change the colorful 28" diameter glass wheels. The Hutchisons created the kaleidoscope wheels using a variety of glass techniques including stained, etching, foiled fused, blown tube glass, tack-fused glass, full flat fused glass, plus flower transparencies and glass jewels.

The Courthouse is open to the public from 8am - 5pm; the exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited.

The beautiful back lawn of the Governor's Mansion is the site of the Carson City Symphony's twenty-seventh annual "Pops Party" concert on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. The Railroad Tracks program features the Carson City Symphony, Carson Chamber Singers, Strings in the Schools youth orchestra, and guest singer Olivia Hakel. A versatile performer, Hakel sings many styles of music, from opera to pops. Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment begins at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will play railroad tunes, marches, and more. The Symphony will be joined by more than 30 Strings in the Schools students for Bugli's "I've Been Fiddlin' on the Railroad."

Admission is free. Seating is on the lawn; the audience is welcome to bring blankets (some chairs will be provided) and food. Snacks and beverages will be on sale before and during the concert. Proceeds from raffle and food sales benefit the Carson City Symphony Association's artistic and educational programs.

I am busy right now putting the finishing touches on it, and am quite pleased with this reflection of my Nevada experience. It's the bi-annual Memorial Day Weekend open studio event in Tuscarora Nevada. It's your chance to meet the artists: Cathy Altenberg, Ron Arthaud, Marti Bein, Susan Church, Steve Feasel, Joan Giannecchini, Karel Hendee, Jerry Henderschott, Stan Kapelan, Nancy McClelland, Bee McBride, Michael McBride, Marilyn Norton, Ben Parks, Dennis Parks, Gail Rappa, Vivian Schupbach, and many more. The artists open their studios to all visitors plus art demonstrations, poetry readings, and music by the Free Range String Band. The Independence Valley 4-H Club hosts a barbeque, ice cream, and bake sale.

Jon Mendle at Brewery Arts Center

The Brewery Arts Center and Sierra Nevada Guitar Society present an evening with World Class Guitarist Jon Mendle on Friday, May 20th at 7pm in BAC’s Grand Ballroom.

Jon Mendle will transport you to another era as he plays his 11 string Archguitar. He began studying the guitar at the age of 12, and recently earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at the San Francisco Conservatory where he studied with renowned guitarist Sergio Assad. Based in San Francisco, Jon has performed solo and ensemble works at venues throughout northern California and Nevada. In 2009, he won the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s biennial Guitar Concerto Competition, playing Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra. He performed this work with the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra in May 2010.  Jon’s primary instrument is an 11-string Archguitar built in 2007 by Alan Perlman of San Francisco. The Archguitar is a hybrid of the Renaissance and Baroque lutes, 19th century guitar, and modern guitar, making it ideal for a large cross section of early music, as well as certain modern and impressionist works.

Larry Aynesmith, guitarist and Nevada Artist Fellowship honoree, opens the performance for Mendle.

Heidi Ayarbe, Carson City native and author of Freeze Frame and Compromised, recently published Compulsion, her new young adult novel. Award-winning author Francisco X Stork of Marcelo in the Real World) stated: “Compulsion is a starkly honest, compelling read. It will grab you and plunge you into the unusual, yet strangely familiar mind of Jake Martin and you will come out different.”

The Carson City Library Foundation is hosting a reading by Carson City native Heidi Ayarbe on Wednesday, May 18, 5:30 pm B'Sghetti's. Ms. Ayarbe will read from Compulsion.

The funds raised will support the Carson City Library Foundation's Capital Campaign Fund for the new Library’s Teen Area.

Tickets: $20 each, $5 for children 10 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the Browser's Corner bookstore at the Carson City Library or call Amber Sady, Youth Librarian at 887-2244 ext. 1012 to reserve your ticket and pick it up at will-call at B’Sghetti’s.

Exhibition of Wally Cuchine Art Collection

An exhibition of selected works from the Wally Cuchine Art Collection will be at the Saint Mary's Art Center from May 1 – June 19, 2011. The public is cordially invited for the reception for the collector, Saturday, May 14, 4 - 6pm. The Center is open to the public Fridays through Sundays, 11am to 4pm.

Wally arguably owns largest individual collection of work by Nevada artists, now with more than 1,000 pieces, in the state. The exhibition includes a selection of work from the collection including pieces by Ron Arthaud, Robert Caples, Larry Jacox, Jean LeGassick, Jim McCormick, Marilyn Melton, Jeff Nicholson, Craig Sheppard, and Sidne Teske.

This spring, Wally recently received the Judith Winzeler Award for Excellence in the Humanities and a Governor's Arts Award for Leadership in the Arts. He was awarded a Tourism Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nevada Commission on Tourism in 2010 and was named a Distinguished Nevadan by the Nevada system of Higher Education in 2006 for advancing the cultural well being of Nevadans.

Wally recently retired as Director of the Eureka Opera House and Eureka Sentinel Museum and Director of Cultural Tourism and Economic Development in Eureka County. In these roles he regularly brought music, poetry, theater, and literary events to Eureka County. He also created a permanent art collection of work by Nevada artists for Eureka County that is on permanent exhibition at the Eureka Opera House.

Wild Horse Children's Theater presents "Honk! Jr.", the award winning musical that transformed Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale of the Ugly Duckling into a modern musical comedy appropriate for everyone in the family. Performances are at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street.

Written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, "Honk! Jr." tells the story of Ugly, who is shunned because of his odd, gawky looks and struggles for acceptance and understanding from his family and the other animals in the barnyard. Along his journey, he not only discovers his true beauty and how to be comfortable in his own skin (or rather, feathers), but he also finds love and acceptance, regardless of what others think.

DJ Eagle Bear Vanas, an Odawa Indian motivational speaker and storyteller, will give a talk at Western Nevada College Carson City campus, Saturday, April 30, 10:30 a.m. He will present “Success…..It’s in our Blood,” at Sarah Winnemucca Hall, Aspen Building, in a free event that is open to both students and the community.

The Michigan resident uses traditional warrior concepts and wisdom to inspire others to achieve high goals and ideals. He has spoken to more than 3,000 audiences around the country, including NASA, IBM, and Walt Disney, along with two speaking engagements at the White House. He is also the author of a book, The Tiny Warrior: A Path to Personal Discovery & Achievement, which has been printed in six countries.

The event is sponsored by the WNC Indigenous Native American Student club.

The UNR Latino Research Center and the Hilliard Endowment Fund present Victor Villaseñor with "Rooted in Family: a Lecture about Pride in Heritage, Education, and the Power of Personal Achievement."

Victor Villaseñor, a gifted and accomplished author and speaker, brings a fresh perspective to a number of universal themes: We are all one race. The human race. He will discuss pride in cultural heritage, the strength of family, world peace, the power of the written word, and dedication to education and personal achievement.

Villaseñor wrote the screenplay for The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, starring Edward James Olmos. HBO is now making a miniseries based on his trilogy Rain of Gold, Wild Steps of Heaven, and Thirteen Senses.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art and the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery are exceptionally pleased to announce that the 2011 Annual Student Art Show will open Thursday April 28th. The exhibition will be juried by Barbara London, curator in the Department of Media and Performance Art at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. The exhibition will include artworks by students in all media: painting and drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital media, etc. London will also select the Graduate Student Association Award-winner from studio visits with MFA applicants.

Ms. London will also give a lecture that evening from 5 - 6:30pm followed by a reception until 8:00pm. Please join us for these events to celebrate the University of Nevada, Reno’s inspiring art students!

Joe McCarthy CCAI Incoming Executive Director

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] Board of Directors is delighted to announce that Joe McCarthy will become the organization’s Executive Director on July 1, 2011. The Board stated that Joe’s commitment, energy, and vision are vital to CCAI and to the arts in northern Nevada.

CCAI Board President Cyndy Brenneman said, “We are thrilled to have Joe join CCAI. We look forward to his leadership and continuing CCAI’s work bringing art to our community through exhibitions, speakers’ programs, and arts in the schools.”

Joe has lived in northern Nevada for 32 years and is married with two adult children. He earned a BA in history from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and a MA in curriculum development from State University of New York, Albany. He has also completed graduate coursework from UNR.

Throughout Joe’s varied career, he has maintained a strong dedication to a dynamic arts and culture environment for Carson City. Joe’s nine years as Director of Business Development with the City of Carson City ushered in a new level of cultural appreciation and unprecedented sophisticated "Big Picture" civic thinking. As Director of Business Development, Joe collaborated with the Carson City Library to create the Business Resource Innovation Center [BRIC], a center for business development in the former Fireside Inn. He is a firm believer in arts & culture being an equal partner in a town’s life along with business and government. Joe worked to establish both the Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition and the Carson City Cultural Commission, a city agency. He was Executive Director of Brewery Arts Center from 1996 – 2002 and produced outstanding programming and facility growth during his tenure there.

Saint Mary’s Art & Retreat Center in Virginia City, Nevada presents the 5th annual Dusty Roads Artists’ Trail: Vanishing Nevada exhibition. The After 5 Mixer & Artists’ Reception takes place at the Dini Cultural Center, 120 N California St, Yerington, Nevada, Thursday, April 21, 2011, 5 – 7pm.

This year’s selected artists include Ann Armijo, Carol Grigus, Emma Auriemma, Erik Holland, Francheska Clark, Kaleigh Surber, Karen Kreyeski, Kristin Hamlet, Mike Bond, Mimi Patrick, Pam Brekas, Patricia Sherer, Judy Allen and Tony Allen.

Experience the fluid, erratic, and astonishing movements of Leo Villareal’s works in Animating Light as they come to life through composer Jean-Paul Perrotte’s musical score. Perrotte’s improvisational electronic score responds to the patterns of light manifested by the computer codes of Villareal’s light sculptures. This is the second in a series of three programs designed to interpret Villareal’s work.

Animating Light, now at the Nevada Museum of Art, is the first museum survey of the groundbreaking work of Leo Villareal, whose stunning manipulations of light and color are internationally renowned. Villareal is the most prominent light sculptor of his generation. In 1997, he abandoned his work with interactive television and began creating sculptures in which he combined strobe lights, neon, and most recently, LED bulbs activated by the artist’s own custom-made software.

Animating Light will be at the Museum through May 22, 2011.
