We he(ART) Bikes Art Show

The Reno Bike Project presents its second annual bike art show and fund-raiser. Join us at Grayspace Gallery and Holland HQ and enjoy a variety of bike-themed art. Purchase paintings, photos and multi-media pieces from artists such as Ahren Hertel, Chris Carnel, Candace Nicol and many more. Profits help support Grayspace, The Holland Project and the Reno Bike Project, a nonprofit group that encourages cycling in the Truckee Meadows. We will be auctioning off a bicycle rack made by Anthony Alston out of an organ. Support provided by the Sierra Arts Foundation, the Nevada Arts Council and New Belgium Brewing.

When: 6 p.m. Sat., April 26.

Where: 26 Cheney St. Turn east at Recycled Furniture on South Virginia Street; next door to Salon 7.

SMACenter|CCAI|Anthony Alston: "Orphic Excavations"

[For those of you planning ahead, we send early notice of CCAI|St. Mary's Art Center's first collaborative exhibition project. We hope you'll save the date and join us next month on Saturday, May 17 up on the Comstock.]

"Orphic Excavations," an exhibition by Anthony Alston at St. Mary's Art Center (SMACenter), is the product of a two-month long Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) artist residency.


A reception for the artist will take place Saturday, May 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. SMACenter located at 55 North R St., Virginia City, NV. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited. The Center is open daily from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

During his residency at SMACenter, Mr. Alston has focused on unearthing veins in the epic tales surrounding Virginia City and the foundation of the St. Mary's Art Center. By investigating, and subsequently diffusing and filtering, historical facts and legends in conjunction with using the structure of the historic building, Mr. Alston has created an engaging site-specific installation.

Charles Arnoldi + Roger Berry

"Charles Arnoldi's paintings are carefully balanced in a harmonious colorful interplay of repeated abstract geometrical forms. Born in 1946 in Dayton, OH, Arnoldi lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. A recipient of frequent honors, including two Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and the "Maestro Fellowship" from the California Arts Council, he has been showcased in numerous solo exhibitions, including most recently at the Charles Cowles Gallery, NY and the Busan Metropolitan Art Museum, Busan, Korea. His artwork can be found in various museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art and San Francisco Museum of Art.

Northern California artist Roger Berry creates metal sculptures whose arching shapes seem to suggest loosely intertwined knots. Looped forms twist around and curve back upon themselves in gracefully choreographed movement. Born in Chico, CA in 1950, Berry received his degree in art from Raymond College, University of the Pacific in 1972. He has had a large number of works purchased for public art installations throughout the country."

"John Yoyogi Fortes is in a period of transition with his art, questioning both his painting and thought process. In his past work, subject matter drove the content in turn affecting his process.

With this exhibit at Grayspace, Fortes decided to reevaluate the process that has led him further away from his intuitive side. Fortes is now working towards reconnecting with his inner sensibilities as a painter, how he lays images down, how he responds intuitively to the process and where it takes him. Acting on impulse will no longer be diluted or redefined by questioning or making reference to old work."

April FWAC! at the Bliss Mansion!

FWAC!, CCAI's monthly First Wednesday Arts Coffee, will meet in April on April 2, from 4:30 to 6:00 at the Bliss Mansion located at the corner of Robinson and Elizabeth in historic Carson City across the street from the Governor's Mansion.

We hope you can join fellow artists, and arts & culture enthusiasts for our 'no host,' informal monthly arts gathering.
