Books & Writers

CCAI and the Carson City Library's"spring Books & Writers Project" continues with a reading by writer and Western Nevada College professor Ursula Carlson, author of "Trails of Historic New Mexico: Routes Used By Indian, Spanish, and American Travelers Through 1886". The book surveys the major historic trails of New Mexico and other parts of the American Southwest. The trails were used by Indians, prospectors, soldiers, buffalo hunters, immigrants, and cattle and sheep drovers. Unlike more famous Western trails, they were used as a network of two-way trade routes instead of one-way avenues for westward migration.

Ms. Carlson will also offer a workshop on Thursday afternoon, May 13 from 3:30–4:30pm.

Bob Larson, railroad photographer and former Western Pacific engineer on the Feather River division, began his railroad career in the signal department of the Chicago & North Western. In 1956, he hired on with the Western Pacific and retired 30 years later (on the Western Pacific’s eastern Division in Nevada) with a perfect safety record. During that time and continuing today, Bob photographed the continuing changes of the railroad, his co-workers, and the environment that shaped his remarkable career. Bob’s extensive collection of photos have been presented in two volumes, Western Pacific Trackside with Bob Larson and Life on the Feather River Route: A Railroader’s Scrapbook Pictorial of Memories.

Now retired and splitting his time between Las Vegas and northern California, Bob entertains rail enthusiasts at historical society meetings, conventions and small gatherings with his personal recollections and samplings of his photographic record. Bob is also a frequent contributor to the Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society’s publication The Headlight. A great photographer and story teller, Bob always leaves his audiences wanting more. Don’t miss this entertaining glimpse into the life of a railroad engineer and our final segment celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Western Pacific Railroad in Nevada.

Call for Proposals: Off The Strip

"The Contemporary Arts Center is currently accepting submissions for “Off The Strip,” a 4-day new genres art festival held in Las Vegas from October 14-17th, 2010.

The CAC seeks submissions for performance, media, and digital works, including installations. "Off the Strip" will take place at multiple venues including the CAC gallery, an alternative theater space, a sci-fi center located in Commercial Center (one of Las Vegas' first "strip malls"), and the showroom of the Aruba Hotel's Thunderbird Lounge in downtown Las Vegas."
