New Work by Emily Kennerk                                            

"Emily Kennerk's installation casts a bright, critical light on the real estate collapse that has transformed our city.  A twenty-two hour-long video projection pays momentary homage to every foreclosed home in the city in 2009.  Photographs appropriated from online images are reproduced on sheer textiles at room-size; the interiors(and houses that surround them) unevenly obfuscated, disintegrating, evaporating.  A powdered graphite rubbing traces the exterior wall of a vacant home and like rubbings of tombstones, Kennerk's act of transference and inscription functions here as both memorial and artifact, conflating distances and uniting surfaces."

Through the Grapevine Bus Tour

"Join us for a tour of a place meant to be passed through - a tour, essentially, of a highway. We will visit contemporary and historic lines of conveyance through the transitional geography between Central and Southern California - the epic Tejon Pass region.

The tour is part of the CLUI exhibit Through the Grapevine: Streams of Transit in Southern California's Great Pass, on display through August 29.

The bus will depart from the Center for Land Use Interpretation's Los Angeles location at 9 AM and return by 7 PM.

Tour ticket price is $30. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, August 3rd @ 12 noon PST, and must be purchased online."

Using a GPS unit and a compass, New Mexico-based artist Bill Gilbert attempts to walk carefully pre-determined routes in both space and time across landscapes in the American West. His carefully-made plans are invariably disrupted by the realities of terrain and the limitations of the human body. In the tradition of British artists such as Richard Long and Chris Drury, Gilbert's "Physiocartography" performances chart the distance between the map and the terrain, and are documented in drawings, video, and audio recordings.

How Soccer Explains the World

The World Cup may be over, but enthusiasm for the global sport continues at the Courthouse Gallery, site of Goal 2010!, CCAI's exhibition of World Cup fine art posters – and at the Carson City Library. The  Library currently features a display of soccer books from  their collection of books on the subject –suitable for all interest and age levels.

 A recent addition to their holdings is "How Soccer Explains the World." Subtitled "an {unlikely} theory of globalization,"  this remarkable collection of ten essays by New Republic Editor Franklin Foer explores issues ranging from ethnic strife in the former Yugoslavia and the role of Red Star Belgrade supporters, to America's ambivalence towards the most popular game on the planet. The book encourages  a view of soccer and its myriad social contexts as ideal for social, political and  existential reflection on the world. It's a fun, serious read!

Tahoe 2010 ARTour

"Thirty-two talented local artists will open their studios to the public this year throughout the North Tahoe-Truckee Region for two weekends of celebrating the visual arts! ARTour is a self-directed studio tour offering numerous opportunities to meet artists in their work environment, to learn about a variety of art mediums, and to buy directly from the artists. In its seventeenth year, Tahoe ARTour is proud to welcome 22 returning artists as well as 10 new artists. A variety of art mediums are featured, including watercolor, acrylics, oil and pastel paintings, in addition to weaving, glass, fabric art, ceramics, pottery, sculpture, mixed media, woodworking and photography.

Many of the artists are well established with others being emerging artists. All have been juried into ARTour to ensure a high level of quality."
