Giacomo Fiore brings his exciting guitar skills to the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday, October 29 at 2pm. The performance is part of the Brewery Art Center’s Classical Performance Series and is presented in collaboration with the Sierra Nevada Guitar Society.

The Italian born musician will perform both traditional and modern works to create a magical musical experience. Fiore is an imaginative and accomplished guitar player who is comfortable in a wide variety of styles. His music making has both flair and depth.

A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory and Belmont University, Fiore has performed across the U.S. and around the world. Today Giacomo is continuing his musical explorations as a Ph.D. student in Musicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he focuses on the development of alternative guitar repertoires in just and microtonal tunings.

Pre-concert lecture and brief classical guitar open mic at 1:00pm

Buster Blue: Live at BAC

You are invited to help make Buster Blue's DVD: “Live Performance at the BAC.”

Enjoy an evening of great music when Buster Blue takes the stage in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall on Saturday, August 27th, 8pm. The Reno-based band’s unique style of Americana Folk challenges the notion everything musical has been done before because Buster Blue has found a place inhabited only by their own off-kilter creation. The five members utilize an arsenal of instruments that include horns, banjo, accordion, chains, and a well placed bucket. Their intention to revisit the American musical roots tradition may have much to do with their upbringing in Gardnerville. Buster Blue’s musical educations range from one member being drum major of the high school band to another being a screamer in a hardcore group. Their diverse backgrounds and upbringings help give color to their music, as well as make it difficult to pigeonhole them to a genre.

This lively film is an unforgettable portrait of legendary vocalist Betty Carter, one of the greatest living exponents of jazz. Uncompromised by commercialism throughout her long career, she has forged alternative criteria for success — including founding her own recording company and raising her two sons as a single parent. Parkerson’s special film captures Carter’s musical genius, her paradoxical relationship with the public and her fierce dedication to personal and artistic independence.

Hilarious, tragic, stirring, this fly-on-the-wall look at several weeks in an Iranian divorce court provides a unique window into the intimate circumstances of Iranian women’s lives. Following Jamileh, whose husband beats her; Ziba, a 16-year-old trying to divorce her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam, who is desperately fighting to gain custody of her daughters, this deadpan chronicle showcases the strength, ingenuity, and guile with which they confront biased laws, a Kafaka-esque administrative system, and their husbands’ and families’ rage to gain divorces.

Charting Miranda’s transformation from famed Brazilian singer to Hollywood’s first Latina star to independent artist, award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Helena Solberg shows how Miranda’s saga exemplifies contradictions in the relationship between Latin America and the United States that persist today. At the convergence of sexual politics, cultural colonialism, and one woman’s life, this moving film powerfully explores the complex factors behind the image and life of the “Tutti-Frutti Woman,” Carmen Miranda.

Pioneering Black American composer-arranger-pianist Mary Lou Williams is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of jazz. In this authoritative film, lively interviews with Williams, Dizzy Gillepsie and Buddy Tate interweave the musical and personal elements of her dramatic life. At the height of her career, she dropped out of music to help drug-addicted musicians in Harlem, making a triumphant comeback fifteen years later. A spirited tribute to Williams’ indelible contribution to American culture, narrated by Roberta Flack.

Classical Guitarist Arina Burceva

The Brewery Arts Center [BAC] launches its Classical Performance Series with a performance by Arina Burceva. The Ukrainian born musician is a popular performer at musical events around the world. Ms. Burceva is actively involved in composing her own repertoire for the guitar. Inspired by nature, art, literature, poetry and mythology, her musical style reflects elements of Jazz, Classical, Baroque, and Impressionism. BAC's beautifully restored ballroom is the perfect setting for her music.

Ms. Burceva began playing guitar at 8 years old. By the time she was a young teen she was already an accomplished musician and went on to study music as well as English and Art History in college.

Before the concert, stop in at BAC's Artisan Store from 5 - 9pm for the opening reception for the group exhibition, Here Comes the Sun. The artists' work celebrates the arrival of summer and features the work of its resident artists, Brewery instructors, and advanced students. The show is in the Artisan Store through August 15. BAC's Artisans Store features work by artists from northern Nevada and the Eastern Slope.
