And if you're not the carny sort, you can still have a blast on the scenic rally rides named The Whip, Tilt-A-Whirl, Twister and Screamer, as they lead through the High Sierra Nevada Mountains, around Lake Tahoe, and across the beautiful Nevada desert. Stop the Car | Erik Lauritzen

[Work by northern Nevada photographer Erik Lauritzen, who passed away last year, is featured in an upcoming exhibition at the Nevada Museum of Art]

Stop the Car, Dad: Erik Lauritzen
June 28 – September 21, 2008


Stop the Car, Dad! consists of selections from Erik Lauritzen’s most recent series of color photographs taken during his automobile journeys throughout the Great Basin of the American West. From images of abandoned military installations in Nevada to roadside vernacular architecture in Utah, Lauritzen’s photographs remind us that even mundane places can be awe-inspiring and otherworldly. Although Lauritzen has yet to receive the broad recognition that he deserves, he has earned the respect of fellow photographers such as Morley Baer, who praised Lauritzen’s photographs for their “ephemeral and emotional spontaneity.”

New commissioned works by Taeyoon Choi and Joseph DeLappe

"As many New Yorkers ready for the annual ritual of summer travel, Eyebeam presents Tourists and Travelers, an art exhibition resulting from Taeyoon Choi and Joseph DeLappe's 2007-08 residencies at Eyebeam. The show features an unlikely pair of projects that reflect the artists' interests in journeys across real and virtual spaces: a Second Life avatar modeled on Mahatma Gandhi and a tourist-chasing, robotic duck. Choi, from Seoul , Korea , and DeLappe, from Reno , Nevada , both traveled to New York City for their residencies as recipients of Eyebeam's inaugural Commission for Resident Artists.

Taeyoon Choi's electro-mechanical bird Camerautomata Charlie: Image Digesting Robotic Duck is unleashed in tourist-heavy habitats, such as New York City 's Central Park , to roam and snap-and then defecate-photos of its own. Born of a hacked digital camera, printer and vacuum cleaner, Camerautomata Charlie and its flock will be on display at Eyebeam alongside digital prints, drawings, and video documentation of interventions in public spaces.

Joseph DeLappe will present documentation, artifacts and new works derived from The Salt Satyagraha Online-Gandhi's Salt March in Second Life, his 240-mile reenactment of the walk in real life and in cyberspace. Over the course of 26 days in the spring of 2008, DeLappe walked the entire distance on a customized treadmill at Eyebeam, which was programmed to control his online Gandhi avatar in Second Life. A centerpiece of the Tourist and Travelers exhibition is a monumental cardboard replica-the same height, in fact, as Michelangelo's sculpture of David-created from a 3-D model of the Gandhi avatar. Large format prints, stop-action animations, and video from the performance piece will also be on view."

Sierra Arts Foundation 2008 Grant Application Due June 13!

"Note that 4:00 pm Friday June 13th, 2008 is the deadline to apply, not a postmark date. Applications lacking materials or arriving late will not be accepted.

2008 Grant Application Information

The Sierra Arts Foundation has provided Endowment Fund Grants to artists working in the northern Nevada region since 1986. Intended to encourage personal artistic growth, the awards are merit-based and free of obligatory stipulations. Applicants displaying defined plans to pursue educational opportunities and create innovative work in visual, performing, and literary disciplines have an increased likelihood of receiving funding. The Sierra Arts Grants Committee reviews each grant application in detail, taking time to carefully assess the level of quality made evident by the artwork and performances under consideration.

Eligibility: Any individual artist residing within a 100 mile radius of Reno may submit an application."

"Join the NMA and the Black Rock Press in welcoming Steven Nightingale for a special reading from Cinnamon Theologies, his third book of sonnets. Nightingale’s newest writings are meant to explore the beauties and blessings available everywhere—in the elements of daily life, in woman and child, in art, and in the wild Great Basin. Published by the Black Rock Press, copies of Cinnamon Theologies will be available for purchase at the event. A reception and book-signing will follow the program.

Admission to this event is free. A ticket is required for guaranteed seating. Tickets are available on a “first come, first served” basis and are available for pick-up only beginning June 3 at the NMA admissions desk."
