Performing Villareal's Animating Light
with Composer Jean-Paul Perrotte

Experience the fluid, erratic, and astonishing movements of Leo Villareal’s works in Animating Light as they come to life through composer Jean-Paul Perrotte’s musical score. Perrotte’s improvisational electronic score responds to the patterns of light manifested by the computer codes of Villareal’s light sculptures. This is the second in a series of three programs designed to interpret Villareal’s work.

Animating Light, now at the Nevada Museum of Art, is the first museum survey of the groundbreaking work of Leo Villareal, whose stunning manipulations of light and color are internationally renowned. Villareal is the most prominent light sculptor of his generation. In 1997, he abandoned his work with interactive television and began creating sculptures in which he combined strobe lights, neon, and most recently, LED bulbs activated by the artist’s own custom-made software.

Animating Light will be at the Museum through May 22, 2011.

a Benefit Screening for Chilean Earthquake Relief

The Digital Media Studio of UNR presents "The Machine Stops", an experimental machinima animation project. Based upon E.M. Forster's 1909 classic science fiction short story, the film was created almost entirely within the online world of Second Life with animation created by students in Professor Joseph DeLappe's Imaging and Mixed Media course. The sound track was created by Professor Jean-Paul Perotte's Music Composition course.

This world premiere event is a fundraiser for Chilean earthquake relief: all proceeds go to "Una Escuela Para Chile/A School For Chile".

CCAI's talk series, Nevada Neighbors, returns for its sixth season this Wednesday, September 17 at 6:30 pm* with:

Nevada Neighbors – "Sounds Good: Experimental Contemporary Music"

presentation by Composer Jean-Paul Perrotte

Mr. Perrotte's talk will provide a fascinating introduction to contemporary experimental music. As a composer, Mr. Perrotte is interested in the real sounds in our everyday life, as well as the music and sounds created by composers and musicians. He comments: "The sounds of our environment define our location. The rhythm, pitch and timber of the sonic events we experience in our daily activity become familiar to us. That familiarity helps us navigate our immediate surroundings. By juxtaposing disparate field recordings with synthesized sound, new environments can be created, with new navigational possibilities."
