Saturday, October 29th from 2 – 5pm

Come celebrate the Latino Research Center’s 3rd Annual Celebration of Dia de los Muertos on campus in the Knowledge Center's Rotunda. In celebration of this holiday, the Latino Research Center will be providing an exhibition area for altars to be put on display. Prizes will be awarded to winners for best altars.* Attendees are welcome to submit their own altars or just come and enjoy the altar displays. Food, beverages, music and many fun activities for children, including mask-making and sugar skull decoration will also be provided at the event. This event is free and open to the public.

*The deadline for requesting a space for an altar entry is Friday, October 28. 3’x3’ tables will be provided to those who have requested space. Please call the Latino Research Center 775.682.9043 or email iwest@unr.edu to request space for altar entry.

Thursday, September 22, 5:30pm: exhibition closing lecture by Keun Young Park in Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Wells Fargo Auditorium, room 124. The closing reception will be in Sheppard Gallery, Church Fine Arts, 6:30 - 8pm.

Both living in Jersey City, New Jersey but previously unknown to each other, Sky Kim and Keun Young Park create their artwork through very time-consuming and repetitive manners. This exhibition considers images created from this approach to artmaking. Park constructs “micro-collages” made from tiny pieces of torn up photographs punctured by a pin, while Kim creates large-scale scrolls by making thousands of marks, rendering voluptuous drawings in a variety of media.

Sky Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and received a Master’s Degree in Painting at Pratt Institute. She is a recipient of the National Museum of Contemporary Art’s National Korean Art Competition Awards and a Pratt Institute Art Grant.

Keun Young Park was born in Seoul, South Korea, where she received her BFA and MFA Degrees in Sculpture at Seoul National University. Her awards include being an A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship and Exhibition Recipient; the winner of Curator’s Choice - a competition for the ‘Artist Talk on Art’ organization; and the Juror’s award at ‘Small Works’ – an international competition at NYU gallery.

Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada

The University of Nevada Reno's Knowledge Center presents, Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada, an exhibition of work by local artists who experimented with art styles and lifestyles out of Nevada’s mainstream. While many Nevadans were settling into cozy, traditional “apple-pie” American lifestyles after World War II, a tight-knit group of artists were producing colorful, nontraditional art, and living lifestyles that matched. For the first time, the work of this talented group is presented together, at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno through September 16.

Post-War Bohemians in Northern Nevada contains the work by 16 of these artists who often gathered in Virginia City, as well as took classes and encouraged one another at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The featured artists include Zoray Andrus, Betty Bliss, Nancy Bowers, Gus Bundy, Robert Cole Caples, Ben Cunningham, Joanne de Longchamps, Robert Hartman, Ruth Hilts, Craig Sheppard, Yolande Sheppard, Louis Siegriest, Adine Stix, Marge Tanner, Richard Guy Walton, and Ed Yates.

University Professor of Art Emeritus Jim McCormick and Christopher Schwartz, an accomplished student intern, co-curated the show and published a 44-page catalog about northern Nevada’s post-war art community. It is the first time that the artists have been featured together in one publication. The catalog is available free at the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public through September 16: Monday through Thursday, 7:30am – 8pm; Friday 7:30am – 5pm, Saturday-Sunday 1 – 5pm. Some select pieces are available for viewing only in the Special Collections Department on the Third Floor, 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday.

"UNR BFA student Jane Kenoyer has a rare opportunity to watch her paintings come to life. With the help of an artistic team of faculty and staff members from the School of the Arts and Teaching and Learning Technology, Kenoyer's saga of love, betrayal and forgiveness is transformed from the canvas into a live ballet called "Shanghaied."

The production's original choreography was created by Barbara Land, lecturer of dance; music by Jean-Paul Perrotte, lecturer of music; costumes by Gini Vogel, art professor; and stage effects by Theatre Design and Technology Specialist Michael Fernbach and Media Production Specialist Maryan Tooker. University student Kevin Davies is the assistant stage director."

"The “Honoring the Horse” exhibit will not only include “glamour shots” and posters of horses from the movies, but will also highlight the major roles that horses have played in Nevada’s mining, farming, ranching, transportation and tourism industries. Additionally, it will illustrate the sometimes-conflicting interests and views surrounding the treatment and desired fate of Nevada’s wild horses.
Materials on display will include film and audio recordings of Reno’s Wild Horse Annie (Velma Johnson), who successfully advocated for passage of the first federal legislation protecting wild horses and burros from inhumane treatment. This September marks the 51st anniversary of the passage of the Wild Horse Annie Act. Helping Annie to make her case in Washington D.C. were Gus Bundy’s powerful photos of wild horse round-ups, which will alsobe featured at the exhibit."

"This exhibition features three artists from Seattle: Debra Baxter, Dawn Cerny and Jenny Heishman, who concentrate on sculpture based in historical and narrative elements. The structure will be an untraditional, three-person arrangement as the artists are invited to create a unique exhibition based both on their own works and in collaboration with each other. The title of the exhibition Every distance is not near, the only element directed by Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, is a Bob Dylan song “I Shall Be Released,” as sung by Nina Simone. How the artists interpret this theme will be part of the excitement of the show’s development."

"celebrating 40 years of friendship and art-making between UNR Professor Robert Morrison and Professor Emeritus Edw Martinez. As the title may suggest, there is hidden meaning stemming from 40 years of their creative dialogue. Below are descriptions gleaned from the words of the artists themselves.

40 years......As newly hired art faculty, Bob Morrison and Edw Martinez had their first university exhibit when they were given their "first" show in Spring 1969. Neither of them can recall what they showed. Since Edw was brought in to teach ceramics, he thinks his work probably included some kind of clay globs, hanging from plastic sheeting from the ceiling, and Bob may have been making sandblasted imagery upon glass stands or cases. As they say, it doesn't really matter since they are not trying to do a retrospective or a follow-up on 40 years of making art. Martinez remembers that the response to the show was puzzlement.

House…..Morrison was creating metal framework house structures with nets and butterflies. Edw saw one at South Tahoe and really liked it. He then came up with the idea that he could build or replicate Morrison's form or shape/size house in his own material and that they could show the two structures together in a big white empty room. That was the start of the house 'thing', they say.

Last week's work.....The artists have a running joke between them: “Last week's work.” Both Morrison and Martinez admit to having a suspect reputation that they let things slide, that they are always frantic to the last minute before an exhibition, even sometimes several hours before the doors are to open."
