CCAI Nevada Neighbors Lecture Series

"Everything Is Land Use: Humans and the Common Ground in America" Illustrated Talk by Matthew Coolidge

Nevada Neighbors, the Capital City Arts Initiative's ongoing series of illustrated public talks, will host Matthew Coolidge, director of CLUI – The Center for Land Use Interpretation.

From Nevada’s location on the western edge of the Intermountain West in the center of the Great Basin, environmental issues speak to the heart of the state. A look at these issues through work created by scholars, environmental activists, and artists will provide new information and perspective on our delicate high desert environment.

Southern California-based CLUI has an experimental field station near Wendover in northeastern Nevada. Founded in 1994, CLUI takes a broadly interdisciplinary approach to the investigation of land use, drawing on the natural sciences, sociology, art, architecture, and history.

Mr. Coolidge is the author and editor of several books, including "Overlook: Exploring the Internal Fringes of America with CLUI", and "The Nevada Test Site: A Guide to the Nation's Nuclear Proving Ground."

"... explores the contrast between the vastness of the seemingly endless horizons unique to the Tuscarora landscape, with smaller paintings that zoom in to portray the details of place: a fallen fence, an abandoned car, the shadows off a corrugated roof.

Th artist works on location, or en plein air, preferring the light, color and experience that comes from being in the moment with his subject."

"The SMAC Art And Retreat Center, located in beautiful and cool Virginia City, is proud to offer its grounds to all individuals and groups of Plein Air Painters on Saturday's, starting May 15th thru the end of October.

Artists have 5 ½ acres to explore, providing beautiful vistas of the historic Comstock District as well as the breathtaking 100 mile view.

Our grounds will be open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Each Saturday the center makes our guest restroom and refrigerator available to all participating artists from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Enjoy our beautiful surroundings, have a snack on one of our picnic tables and allow our Education Coordinator to give you a tour of this historic building and wonderful artwork hanging in our four galleries."

Presentation and discussion with Great Basin Basketmakers Founder Mary Lee Fulkerson.

Ms. Fulkerson, also founder of Wild Women, explores the very nature and definition of basketry, the question of art versus craft, and the evolution of “old time” basketry to contemporary woven sculptures and constructions.

NAC Artist Fellowships Applications online!

"The Nevada Arts Council Artist Fellowship Program seeks to recognize and reward outstanding individual artists living in Nevada who demonstrate excellence in their work. Grant awards go to individual artists in each category – literary, performing and visual arts.

Postmark Deadline: April 16. This is a postmark deadline for the application materials to be mailed to the NAC Carson City office. It also means you will need to fill out your online application profile BEFORE - 3 p.m. on April 16. The deadline will not be extended so start working on your application.

Eligible Applicants: All applicants are required to be a practicing professional artist, be a Nevada resident for 12 months prior to application date, have U.S. citizenship or legal resident status and be least 21 years old, and not be a degree-seeking student.

Nevada artists meeting the eligibility requirements need to do the following:

Go to the NAC website and link of the drop down menu along the top labeled Grants/Grants for Artists then click on the Artist Fellowship Guidelines.

Please read and carefully follow the application instructions."
