Budget Cut | Reduced Museum Services

Bottom line: State budget cuts will result in reduced hours of operations beginning July 6.

In addition to the reduced hours of operation, museum staff members have been reduced from a 40 hour work week to a 32 hour work week.

“It is the goal of State Museums to continue to provide as much public programming and public access as possible in light of reduced staffing and reduced hours of operation,” said Peter Barton, Acting Administrator for the Division of Museums and History. “However reduced hours of operation will certainly limit public access to museum facilities.”

The State of Nevada has seven museums managed by the state Division of Museums and History, an agency of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department serves Nevada ’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, presentation and promotion of cultural resources, and education. The Department also includes the State Office of Historic Preservation, Nevada State Library and Archives and the Nevada Arts Council.

"In this 1957 Malibu Productions film, Lt. Col. Glenn Manning is inadvertently exposed to a plutonium bomb blast at Camp Desert Rock. Though burned over 90 percent of his body, he survives, and begins to grow in size....

“The classic film The Amazing Colossal Man is important to Nevada History as it was filmed on location in Boulder City ,” said Eric Moody, Nevada Historical Society acting director. “In addition the film depicts the Las Vegas of the late 1950s.”"

Buttons, Buckles, and Beads: A Vignette of Virginia City Fashion

"... featuring a wide variety of clothing accessories and jewelry worn by people living on the Comstock Mining District during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

“Some of the more fascinating items include a decorative garter belt clasp, a small pendant with red glass beads, and a faux turquoise pendant with a filigree border,” said Sarah Heffner, who put together the exhibit using artifacts she helped excavate during the summer of 2008. Heffner is a graduate student in the Anthropology Department at UNR.

Ms. Heffner drew on the full range of excavations conducted by the State Historic Preservation Office, the Comstock Historic District Commission, and the University of Nevada , Reno since 1993. Most of the material for the exhibit came from excavations conducted in 2008 at the site of Maguire’s Opera House and at what was once a rough part of town on South C Street known as the Barbary Coast.

Virginia City celebrates its 150th anniversary this year as it commemorates the first strikes in 1859. The exhibit in the Comstock History Center is intended as part of a year-long celebration."
