The Nevada Arts Council presents the Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground exhibition in its OXS Gallery thorough December 2. A reception for the artists and talk by printmaker, Sharon Tetly, will take place November 17, 4:30 - 6:30pm. OXS is open to the public 8am - 5pm, M - F.

The exhibition features sixteen artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada. The assembly of printmakers, eight from the north and eight from the south, produced collaborative prints that visually explored connections and disconnections between southern and northern Nevada cultural attitudes, aesthetics, and geographical distinctions.

Nevada’s art communities are not separated by distance of travel alone. There are notable differences among artists throughout the state in what is important in their work, most of which connects with where they live. This traversal of Nevada has also led to improved communication between artists in Reno, Las Vegas, and artists living Nevada's remote outback.

The collaborating artist teams include: Maria Arango, Las Vegas and Lynn Schmidt, Reno; Erik Beehn, Las Vegas and Nolan Preece, Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell, Las Vegas and Galen Brown, Carson City; Daryl DePry, Las Vegas and Sharon Tetly, Carson City; Keith Conley, LasVegas and Sidne Teske, Tuscarora; Anne M. Hoff, Las Vegas and Vicki LoSasso, Reno; Jeanne Voltura, Las Vegas and Candace Nicol, Reno; and Juan D.Varela, Las Vegas and Ashlea Clark, Reno.

NAC Jackpot and Professional Development Grants

The Nevada Arts Council invites individuals to apply online for Jackpot Grants and Professional Development Grants.

Jackpot Grants
Quarterly grants available through the Grants Program, Jackpot Grants support new or exemplary art projects by nonprofit arts and non-arts organizations, public institutions and artists. Artists must have attained a certain level of proficiency as represented in the quality of work samples submitted with the applications. Examples of eligible Jackpot projects for individuals include: costs associated with preparing of portfolios and work samples; and presentation of work (performances, exhibitions, publications, etc).

Online Submission Deadlines:
November 15, 2011 (for projects Jan 1-March 31, 2012)
February 15, 2012 (for projects April 1-June 30, 2012)

Postmark Deadlines for Supplemental Materials:
November 22, 2011 (for projects Jan 1-March 31, 2012)
February 22, 2012 (for projects April 1-June 30, 2012)

Professional Development Grant (PDG)
PDG are noncompetitive grants available throughout the year to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis while funding is available. PDG grants support constituent attendance at professional development activities and are up to $650 for out-of-state activities, up to $500 for in-state activities not sponsored by NAC, and up to $350 for NAC sponsored activities. Postmark Deadline: Available on a first-come first-served and reimbursement basis throughout the year. Eligible Applicants: All applicants are required to be a Nevada resident for 12 months prior to application deadline, be at least 21 years old and not seeking an academic degree. Must demonstrate travel of at least 100 miles roundtrip to qualify.

The Nevada Arts Council presents The Skeletons in Our Closets Are Planning a Parade in Honor of the 2010 Census, a series of mixed media artwork by Darren Johnson through August 5 as part of the Office eXhibition Series (OXS). The gallery is open from M - F, 8 – 5 pm.

Johnson employs traditional realist techniques in unorthodox presentations to examine human interaction. While working for the US Census, Johnson witnessed a similarity between the Census process and community parades - both are communal activities involving public participation and the art of communication. Issues of trust, privacy and secrecy can develop when a person is communicating within and for the sake of a diverse civil society. The artworks in The Skeletons in Our Closets Are Planning a Parade in Honor of the 2010 Census reflect the challenges and complexities associated with these interpersonal efforts while celebrating the joy of communal activities.

Johnson received an Artist Fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council in 2010. A graduate of Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he earned his MFA from Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 2008. Now living in Las Vegas, Johnson exhibits his artwork nationally.

“Exploring Boundaries”

"Using both scientific and natural landscapes, Las Vegas multi-media artist Linda Alterwitz, explores the human connection to our natural environment. Her photographs are multi-layered, similar to collages, combining images of nature and landscapes with less obvious medical references. The artist digitally manipulates and layers together images to create large-scale primarily color photographs by using both high-tech digital cameras and low-tech toy cameras, creating works that invite the viewer in for closer examination."

"The Nevada Arts Council features “Kiddo,” an exhibit by Bryan Christiansen, in its Carson City office through November 26 as part of the Office eXhibition Series (OXS). An artist talk and reception will be held Thursday, October 21 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Christiansen’s works are re-creations and deconstructions composed from found couches, armchairs, tables, mattresses and bed frames. Hunting the surrounding area for abandoned furniture, he reconstructs his finds into animals or deconstructs to create various “trophies” including “antler mounts” and stretched furniture “pelts.”

A South Dakota native, Christiansen attended the University of Nevada, Reno, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2009. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the area, and has been recognized with a Sierra Arts Student Endowment Grant, “Best in Show” at the 2009 UNR Student Exhibition, and a FY 2011 NAC Artist Fellowship Honorable Mention Award. A featured artist in the Stremmel Gallery’s Emerging Artists group exhibition, Christiansen launched Nevada Museum of Art’s Nevada Emerging Artists Series with his first solo exhibit in the summer of 2010."

NAC Artist Fellowships Applications online!

"The Nevada Arts Council Artist Fellowship Program seeks to recognize and reward outstanding individual artists living in Nevada who demonstrate excellence in their work. Grant awards go to individual artists in each category – literary, performing and visual arts.

Postmark Deadline: April 16. This is a postmark deadline for the application materials to be mailed to the NAC Carson City office. It also means you will need to fill out your online application profile BEFORE - 3 p.m. on April 16. The deadline will not be extended so start working on your application.

Eligible Applicants: All applicants are required to be a practicing professional artist, be a Nevada resident for 12 months prior to application date, have U.S. citizenship or legal resident status and be least 21 years old, and not be a degree-seeking student.

Nevada artists meeting the eligibility requirements need to do the following:

“The Lingo of Our Calling: The Legacy of Cowboy Poetry”

"'The Lingo of Our Calling' offers a glimpse into ranching culture of the rural West through the lens of cowboy poetry and related art forms.

The multimedia show features cowboy poetry, music and gear, paintings, photography, posters, and quilting. Short films featuring the art and work of contemporary ranchers offer insight into the culture from those who work the land.

From the time of the open range and trail drives to today’s ranching generation, cowboy poetry, storytelling and music have been a means of entertainment and communication. Because of their universal themes – friendship, loyalty, connection to place, loss, loneliness and change – these art forms have an appeal that reaches well beyond the culture from which it emanates."

Curated by the Western Folklife Center in Elko, and presented as part of the Nevada Arts Council’s Nevada Touring initiative.

Governor's Arts Awards

Seven individuals and organizations will receive a 30th Annual Governor’s Arts Award at a public reception and ceremony in Las Vegas this April.

The Nevada Arts Council and the Governor's Office present these honors for outstanding and enduring contributions to Nevada through artistic achievement and service to the arts.

The 30th Annual Governor's Arts Awards ceremony is scheduled for April 1, 2010 at the World Market Center's ‘Worldview on Sixteen’ ballroom.

The 2010 recipients of the Governor’s Arts Awards are:

* Ellen Hopkins, Carson City - Excellence in the Arts
* Thai Cultural Arts Association, Las Vegas - Excellence in Folk and Traditional Art
* Nevada School of the Arts, Las Vegas- Leadership in the Arts: Education

Quarterly grants up to $750 to teaching artists and educators. BETA grants support small arts education projects designed and presented by organizations and individuals. May include, but are not limited to: art exhibitions, performances, reading and concerts; sponsoring of arts education workshops and conferences.

FY10 Artist Fellowships Awarded

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded five Artist Fellowships for FY10. Congratulations go to: Robert Leonard Reid, Carson City and William Cowee, Carson City in Literary Arts; Miguel Rodriguez, Las Vegas and Elaine Parks, Tuscarora in Visual Arts; and Christopher Wrede, Reno in Performing Arts. In addition to using the $5,000 award to produce art during the fellowship year, each fellow provides a free public event relevant to his or her discipline, through readings, exhibitions, performances, and master classes.

The Artist Services Program, which oversees Artist Fellowships, also awarded a $500 grant to seven honorable mentions this year - Joshua Kryah, Henderson and Susan Priest, Gardnerville (Literary Arts); Robert Contreras, Las Vegas; Jennie Pitts, Gardnerville, and Mary Wherry, Las Vegas (Performing Arts); and Dean Burton, Reno and Gary Reese, Las Vegas (Visual Arts).

"Pyrographic Calabaza"

Reno artist Tia Flores Flores was spurred by a desire to know more about her ancestors, and her creations have evolved into culturally-themed works including vessels, drums, masks and jewelry. Her designs are a reflection of her two families. From her mother's mother, she is greatly influenced by the harsh beauty of the Nevada desert. From her father's mother, she is drawn to the rich cultures of the Aztec and Navajo people. With an emphasis on pyrography (wood-burning), her intricate designs can be found on gourds, vessels, drums, masks, totems and jewelry.

Eureka artist Deon Reynolds uses a Kodak disposable panorama camera to create his photographs. The artist comments: "“The panoramas convey the space of Nevada so well. I like the ease and spontaneity of the disposable camera and, since the viewfinder isn’t very accurate, you’re never really sure what you are going to get on film. It’s kind of like Nevada , you are never sure what you are going to find!”

"... a series of photographs by Las Vegas artist, Heather Protz whose photographic background began with black and white, silver gelatin printing. From there, her passion became Xerox and Polaroid which led her to the digital frontiers of today.

Protz believes, “When great photographs speak – they speak to the viewer. This is what drives me to create work. The movement of humans, animals, machinery, air and clouds is the basis of my work. Images of parking lots, landscapes, skyscrapers, cityscapes, planes, trains, snakes and birds are composited into one canvas. Together these elements represent my daily observations.”
