The Nevada State Museum is bringing wildlife artist Roy Purcell from Tucson, Arizona to celebrate Nevada’s Great Outdoors, the theme of this year's Nevada Day parade. Mr. Purcell will give a talk on Thursday, October 27, 6-8 pm as part of the Museum's monthly Frances Humphrey lecture series which is held the 4th Thursday of each month.

Doors open at 6 pm for the book signing. Admission is free for museum members and children 17 and under; tickets for non-member adults are $8 each. The admission fee covers the lecture and current exhibitions in the main building: Slot machines: The Fey Collection; Nevada: The Photography of Cliff Segerblom; and My Nevada II.

Nevada State Museum: Nevada's Rock Art

The Nevada Rock Art Foundation presents “Nevada’s Rock Art,” a free public lecture by retired BLM State Archaeologist, Dr. Pat Barker on Wednesday, May 11, 6pm at the Nevada State Museum.

As part of an in-depth look at our State's petroglyphs and pictographs, Dr. Barker will explore the different styles of rock art that are spread across our vast State, and investigate possible meanings for this enigmatic art form.

Nevada: The Photography of Cliff Segerblom

The exhibit Nevada: The Photography of Cliff Segerblom is now on display at the Nevada State Museum through August 2, 2011. The exhibition of 25 large format black and white photographs invites viewers to explore the immense changes that have occurred in Nevada from 1938 - 1980.

Cliff Segerblom was chief photographer for the Bureau of Reclamation Hoover Dam Project. His photographs have been published in Life, Time, and National Geographic magazines and displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City where his work is part of the permanent collection. The Nevada exhibition was organized by the Springs Preserve of Las Vegas and presented by the Nevada State Museum.

The museum is open Wednesdays - Saturdays, 8:30 - 4:30pm. For information call 775.687.4810.

Basketry as Art: Does a Basket Have to Hold Something?

Presentation and discussion with Great Basin Basketmakers Founder Mary Lee Fulkerson.

Ms. Fulkerson, also founder of Wild Women, explores the very nature and definition of basketry, the question of art versus craft, and the evolution of “old time” basketry to contemporary woven sculptures and constructions.
