Kuen Young Park: Sheppard Gallery Lecture

Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery
Art Department
University of Nevada, Reno
1664 N. Virginia St
Reno

Reiterate the Repeat: Keun Young Park and Sky Kim
August 29 - September 23
Catalogue designed by Clint Sleeper

Thursday, September 22, 5:30pm: exhibition closing lecture by Keun Young Park in Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Wells Fargo Auditorium, room 124. The closing reception will be in Sheppard Gallery, Church Fine Arts, 6:30 - 8pm.

Both living in Jersey City, New Jersey but previously unknown to each other, Sky Kim and Keun Young Park create their artwork through very time-consuming and repetitive manners. This exhibition considers images created from this approach to artmaking. Park constructs “micro-collages” made from tiny pieces of torn up photographs punctured by a pin, while Kim creates large-scale scrolls by making thousands of marks, rendering voluptuous drawings in a variety of media.

Gallery Hours: Monday - Thursday, 11am - 5pm, Friday, 11am - 2pm
For additional information, please call Sheppard Gallery at 775.785.6658 or email mvecchio@unr.edu

Reno

January 18 - February 18

MYSELF: A Survey of Contemporary Self-Portraiture

Front Door and McNamara Galleries:

MYSELF TOO: A University of Nevada, Reno Art Student Survey of Self-Portraiture
Organized by Andrew Griego and Michelle Lee

Lecture and Opening Reception: January 20 |  5:30 pm

Closing Event: Thursday February 17, with lecture by artist Suzanne Joelson at 5:30 pm [Room 153, Church Fine Arts Building] followed by reception with live Internet performance from Los Angeles with Elizabeth Leister: 6:30-8pm

"From Northern Nevada to all corners in America - - from Macedonia and Greece, to Sweden and French Canada, this large survey-style exhibition presents sixty-six artists, including one collaboration, exploring the theme of self-portraiture. Perhaps considered just the folly of indulgent navel-gazing, the self-portrait continues to be important and interesting because it not only provides varied perspectives of the artist looking back on the self in circumstance, but rather also provides cultural, political and social insight into the time period and conditions under which the art was made. In a growing globalization, how we reflect the times we live in is subject matter that crosses the unsteady boundaries of nation, race, gender, religion, political affiliation, age, class, etc. With over 130 applications for an exhibition in a relatively small town such as Reno, it’s safe to say that self-portraiture remains a popular content for artists of our time. The exhibition demonstrates that humor, pop culture, health, irony, history, intellectual debates, idealism and story-telling are ever-present undertones to how artists express themselves, whether they use self-portraiture as rare device, or as regular all-encompassing investigative tool."

Concurrent with the MYSELF exhibition: MYSELF TOO, a student exhibition of self-portraiture in which all students were invited to participate whether taking a 101 drawing class or graduating as a MFA candidate."

Every distance is not near

UNR School of the Arts Art Department
Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery
Church Fine Arts Building
1664 N. Virginia Street
Reno

October 4 - November 5
Every distance is not near

"This exhibition features three artists from Seattle: Debra Baxter, Dawn Cerny and Jenny Heishman, who concentrate on sculpture based in historical and narrative elements. The structure will be an untraditional, three-person arrangement as the artists are invited to create a unique exhibition based both on their own works and in collaboration with each other. The title of the exhibition Every distance is not near, the only element directed by Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, is a Bob Dylan song “I Shall Be Released,” as sung by Nina Simone. How the artists interpret this theme will be part of the excitement of the show’s development."

Scatter and Heap: Lauren DiCioccio and Paho Mann

These two artists incorporate mass produced objects into their artwork. Ms. Diciocco's hand embroidery and Mr. Mann's photographic categorization prompt viewers to ponder waste and cultural identity in an era concerned with both the environment and the individual.

Devin Charles Hosselkus

[CCAI shares this sad news from Marjorie Vecchio and the UNR Art Department Sheppard Gallery Staff. Our deepest sympathies go to Devin Hosselkus' family and friends]

"Devin Hosselkus - our beloved friend, former gallery preparator and University of Nevada, Reno BFA graduate - passed away on December 30th from a yearlong battle with cancer. He would have been 25 years-old next month. As many of you know, Devin played a deeply integral part in our programming's success and he remains a favored student by all of our out-of-town visiting artists and speakers for the past three years. His loss is irreconcilable. Just a few months ago Sheppard Gallery began organizing a solo exhibition and catalog with Devin of his latest artwork for Fall 2010; this exhibition will still happen and you'll receive information when it approaches.

A memorial service is scheduled on Friday Jan. 22nd from 4 - 6:30 pm at the Nevada Museum of Art, with speakers beginning at 4 pm in the theatre. We hope you can attend and please spread the word. I also want to thank all of you who supported Devin and his family by participating in the Benefit Auction held for him last year by the generous folks at Studio on 4th. Devin and his family were extremely touched by the loving outpouring of our amazing Reno-area community.

For more information please see the Reno Gazette-Journal obituary cut/pasted below or call the gallery at 775-784-6658.

Devin Charles Hosselkus
February 6, 1985 - December 30, 2009

Devin Charles Hosselkus, age 24, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the University of California San Francisco Children's Hospital after a courageous and poignant year-long fight against Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Devin graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. He was a frequent contributor to the Reno community arts scene and worked as a lead artist for the Reno Youth Artworks program in 2008. In January of 2009 Devin opened a solo art exhibition at McKinley Arts and Culture Center in downtown Reno. He also worked as a preparator at the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery at UNR for more than a year and illustrated a children's book written by a local author. When Devin was diagnosed with cancer in February, he was preparing to travel to Vermont for an artist's residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Throughout his extensive cancer treatments, Devin continued to create art in anticipation of applying to graduate school. Devin fought against his cancer with every thread of his being, without complaint. He was and is an inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to know him. His spirit survives in his artwork and he will be remembered and loved always.

Devin is survived by his parents, Chuck and Debbie Hosselkus and his sister, Erika Hosselkus. He is also survived by grandparents, Del and Emma Hosselkus, Dick and Linda Metcalf, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Tribute to Devin will be held at The Nevada Museum of Art, 160 West Liberty St., Reno, NV 89501 on Friday, January 22, 2010, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tribute will begin at 4 p.m. in the theater. Reception will follow in Reynolds Hall.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to UCSF Children's Hospital Inpatient Pediatric Oncology Service at UCSF Foundation Inpatient Pediatric Oncology Service, P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339. Please specify that your donation is in memory of Devin Hosselkus.

"This collaborative exhibition of emerging artists Allison Lacher and Victoria Calabro will feature a large-scale installation specific to the Sheppard Gallery. The artists will transform the gallery space to create an environment that will express the frivolity and simultaneous treachery of the female adolescent experience. This decorative installation will highlight the artists' affinity for materials, humor, and cultural absurdities. Elements of the installation will include twirling batons, ribbon, and performers."

Her large-scale installations contain watercolor and pen drawings, gouache paintings on vellum, latex sculptures, encaustic and printmaking. Murrell's installation process will be open to the public as she creates her piece. Sheppard Gallery invited three undergraduate and graduate students to work as Murrell's assistants, an honor which gives our students first-hand knowledge of an artist's process."

Interconnection: Hwang | Versteeg

Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery
Church Fine Arts Building
University of Nevada, Reno

August 25-September 26, 2008
Eunjung Hwang and Siebren Versteeg

Opening Reception|Lecture: Thursday, Sept. 4

Lecture: 5:30-6:30 Rm 153 | Reception 6:30-8pm

"This two-person exhibit does not have a theme based on content, but rather will concentrate on two different yet complimentary artists, one born in Korea and the other in the Netherlands. As unrelated as their content is, both Versteeg and Hwang show a very contemporary understanding of how interconnection works in our postmodern culture. Versteeg is an artist deeply concerned in the fabricated notion of 'real' time. He works in all forms, including collage, computer programming, video, drawing, sculpture and installation. Hwang is an artist and animator who creates multi-screen animation installations, light projections, sculpture, digital prints and drawings. Her work combines early Korean cartoon imagery resurrected in mountainous landscapes, combing her quirky drawing style with photography and narration."

"Post-Petroleum explores the ramifications of the automobile-scaled, sprawling suburban spaces that make up the edge towns and suburban rings of American cities in an age when the very foundation of this way of life - - inexpensive gasoline - - has been severely undermined. The artwork, which includes all media such as painting, video and sculpture, investigates these types of spaces as they exist today, as well as also suggest a narrative of a future society forced to navigate and live in these sprawling spaces with considerably limited access to fossil fuels."
