Manuel Alfaro, Amerique Powell at U of Phoenix Gallery

University of Phoenix
10345 Professional Circle
Reno

An exhibition of current work by University of Nevada Reno MFA candidates Amerique Powell and Manuel Alfaro is at the University of Phoenix Gallery through November 16. Sierra Arts in Reno manages the gallery.

Manuel Alfaro said that "The inspiration for my work comes from Aztec culture and the current drug war in Mexico. Researching Aztec culture has led me into a complex world of religion and mythology, a world of deity lords and gods."

Amerique Powell said that "This body of work is the result of an exploration of the emotional connection I have with my pets, and my fascination with and attraction to decorative pattern. By merging the animals and patterns, my goal is to give them equal weight, both formally and conceptually, so that neither one is the obvious 'subject.'" Ms. Powell is on the CCAI Artists In Education Roster and teaching CCAI art workshops this fall for students at Carson Middle School, Carson City.

The gallery is open Monday-Thursday 9:00am-10:00pm, Friday 8:00am-9:30pm, Saturday 8:00am-6:00pm, Sunday 1:00pm-8:00pm.

John Molezzo
"Visons of Reno"

"It’s late at night and I’m heading south through town on Virginia Street, maybe I’ll take a right on Second Street and drop by the El Cortez, say “Hi” to Bill Fong, or maybe I’ll keep going and pay my respects to Dorothy at Landrum’s, have a cup of joe and a slice of apple pie. It’s one of those midnight drives where the streets are full of gamblers and dreamers while the neon’s buzzing in reds and blues and yellows and greens. Maybe I’ll stop in at the Mapes, see if ol’ Blue is working the graveyard tonight. Maybe I’ll ride the elevator up to The Sky Room and stare out at the twinkling lights of the Biggest Little City just one more time before I head home."

Through September 2.

1/16/2008

Sierra Arts seeks small, but wide-open, art from Nevada artists The biggest little art show in nevada VI deadline extended to January 31

Sierra Arts invites artists living within the borders of the state of Nevada to submit entries for the latest installment of a juried art show unique to the Silver State . The ‘biggest little’ art shows comprise original artworks that measure precisely 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches.

This year’s theme for the biggest little art show in nevada is “Nevada Wide Open.” Artists may submit works that follow this theme, such as images related to the state’s natural resources, the thriving arts communities, the bright lights and neon of the gaming industry, or other topics as the individual artists see fit.

All entries will go through a juried process to limit the number of pieces in the exhibition to 50. The selected pieces will compete for ten $100 awards. The juror for the biggest little art show in nevada VI: Nevada Wide Open will be MaLynda Poulsen-Jones. Poulsen-Jones was born and raised in Idaho and now lives and works in Walla Walla , Wash. She received her M.F.A. from Boise State University in 2004, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in permanent collections worldwide.

The biggest little art show in nevada began 14 years ago and was conceived by local artist and UNR Professor Emeritus Jim McCormick. [editor notes: Jim was also an inaugural CCAI "CAP" award winner in 2007!]
