On Thursday, January 31, from 5:30 - 7:30pm, Stremmel Gallery will host an opening reception for an exhibition of new works by three artists, Danaë Anderson, Kenzi Shiokava, and Tom Uttech. The show of paintings and sculpture will continue through February 29.

Danaë Anderson's work is a visual journal, an improvisational choreography that reflects her engagement of the conscious and unconscious to "document and honor daily life, loved ones, the self, the ordinary, memory, objects, language, ritual and play." She draws upon images from her own life, narrating in an iconographic style that is playful, dreamlike, and intuitive. She received her BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1978 and her MFA from San Jose State in 1988. She has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant and a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Arts.

A graduate of Chouinard Art School Los Angeles in 1972, with an MFA from Otis Art Institute Los Ang eles in 1974, Kenzi Shiokava creates sculpture from discarded wood, railroad ties, telephone poles, beams and other woods. Shiokava strives to work these materials, which have already been shaped by the elements in their original environment, without losing their natural qualities and vitality. He creates forms “not by imposing a preconceived configuration but by interacting within the structure so that the medium’s own life history becomes the determinant of the final form.” He says he strives “to keep each work as natural as the medium itself yet to exist in another realm, exuding emotion and spirituality.”

Tom Uttech has been described as merging nineteenth-century notions of the ideal landscape with aspects of surrealism and realism to create his unique vision of Wisconcin’s North Woods. The primeval qualities of that untamed area have inspired him to produce a great body of work whose elaborate iconic images range from the region’s wildlife, both real and from local native legend, to the Aurora Borealis of Wisconsin’s northern sky. Uttech’s work may be found in the collections of numerous museums across the country, winning various awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Award in 1998.

The show will continue through February 29. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street . Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:30pm, and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. For more information, contact Stremmel Gallery at 786-0558.

City Of Las Vegas Issues Call For Art Exhibition Proposals

The city of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs invites the submission of proposals for individual and group exhibitions for its 2009/2010 gallery season. Exhibition proposals will be reviewed for programming at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Gallery, located at 800 S. Brush St. , and the Reed Whipple Cultural Center Gallery, located at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North . Images and floor plans of these gallery spaces can be downloaded at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/files/GalleryFloorplans.pdf

Artists/curators must submit a letter of intent in regards to the exhibit with 15-20 supporting images (slides or JPEGs on compact disc) with an identification list, artist statement and artist resume. In addition, other suitable supporting materials may include color prints, exhibition cards and press clippings, all of which are optional. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of materials. All visual art practices suitable for gallery installations lasting between 10 to 12 weeks will be considered.

Submissions must be received by April 1, 2008, to be included in the screening. All applicants can expect notification regarding their proposal via mail by Aug. 1, 2008. The Pursuit of Happiness

"NMA presents a dance performance inspired by Peter Goin’s photogram The Pursuit of Happiness (Mengejar Kebehagiaan). Join us as dancers Tara Rynder, Trannon Mosher, Cari Cunningham, and other local dancers bring Goin’s art to life through a performance of movement and contact improvisation. Prepare to be intrigued as dancing bodies intertwine to translate the photographer’s theatre in The Pursuit of Happiness.

Preceding the performance, an informal sampling of improvisational movement and dance will occur during First Thursday from 5 to 7 pm."

Nov. 29 - Opening lecture and reception

Sheppard Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition that will feature the artwork of new University of Nevada, Reno Art Department faculty member Eunkang Koh. A brochure catalog will also be available. Ms. Koh was hired in 2006 to revive the Department’s printmaking area. Her prints and books include various methods: traditional and digital printmaking as well as non-toxic processes. Fascinated with human nature and heavily influenced by her upbringing in Buddhism, Confucianism and Korean belief, Ms. Koh’s narrative prints center on human/animal combinations of fantastical new creatures, participating in a world where “they exist without knowing who and how they are,” as Ms. Koh writes in her artist statement. Ms. Koh holds a BA and MA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul, Korea and a MFA from California State University, Long Beach.

Catherine Courtenaye's work is based on her exploration of 19th century penmanship. She states that "vestiges of elementary mark-making (alphabets, animals, equations) serve as counterpoints to my looser treatment of line, edge and space. These paintings navigate between the rigors of perfect lines from the past and my own
imperfect brushes, loaded with sensuous color."

Dale Livezey's paintings convey the colors and phenomenon of early morning or late afternoon light on the seemingly endless landscape in his native Montana.

Randall Shiroma is a sculptor who works in stone and terrazzo, creating sculpture that evokes the elements and forms of nature. His polished and patinated concrete sculptures seem to reflect the mountains, sky and water, creating their own sense of presence, revealing his search for the nature of being.
