CALL FOR ARTISTS“Post-Petroleum: Envisioning the Future of Suburban Space in America”Guest Curator:

A call for 2D and 4D submissions for a group exhibition developed and curated by guest curator Christine Pinney Karkow during Reno’s Artown Festival. Deadline for received submissions in office is May 23, 2008.
FEE: There is no submission fee.
THEME DESCRIPTION: This exhibition will explore the ramifications of the automobile-scaled, sprawling suburban spaces that make up the edge towns and suburban rings of American cities in an age when the very foundation of this way of life - - inexpensive gasoline - - has been severely undermined. Please include 2D and 4D work of all media that seeks to explore these types of spaces as they exist today, and/or those that suggest a narrative of a future of a society forced to navigate and live in these sprawling spaces with considerably limited access to fossil fuels.
EXHIBITION DATES: July 1 – July 31, 2008, closing reception July 31, 2008 5-7:00pm.
Possible development of exhibition website with blog forum
for reactions and additions to the exhibit and on-line components during and after exhibition dates.
GALLERY INFORMATION: Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery of the University of Nevada, Reno is a 2000 sq foot contemporary art gallery dedicated to supporting regional, national and international emerging and mid-career artists. This exhibition runs concurrently with the Northern Nevada arts festival ARTOWN.
ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to all US-based visual artists without gallery representation working in 2D and 4D work including painting, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, photography, digital art, graphics, etc. All works submitted must be available for the duration of the show. Some projectors and monitors are available for video work; video work will be included upon availability of technology. Artists must be a minimum of 18 years of age. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All completed submissions must be received in the office by May 23, 2008.
IMAGE SUBMISSION – Submissions should include 5-10 images on CD or digital print formation (8x10”). Please label your CD or prints with your name, contact phone and email.
RETURN OF MATERIALS - If you wish to have your submission materials returned; please include an SASE that is adequate in size for the return of your materials with sufficient postage along with your submission. Curated artists submission may be kept on file with the gallery.
NOTIFICATION - All artists will be notified of the selection results via email on
June 2, 2008.
DELIVERY and RETURN OF ARTWORK: Artists will be responsible for delivery cost to the gallery while the gallery will be responsible for return shipping costs, within reason. Work should be sent in a substantial, reusable packing box. Work not packed safely or in proper box will be returned to sender and not exhibited. Artwork must arrive ready to hang or installed (with all applicable hanging wire/mechanisms, etc. and installation instructions included) no later than June 25, 2008. Selected artwork cannot be accepted after this date.
SALES: All selected artworks will be available for sale unless otherwise indicated by the artist; the gallery takes no cut in sale percentages. All artwork sales will be conducted directly between the artist and the interested buyer.
