"The rhythms of drum and dance will be mingled with the pageantry of colorful Native American dress as Western Nevada College Douglas hosts a Pow wow on campus Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2-3. Local residents are invited to join Native Americans from throughout Nevada and California to watch ceremonial dance and drumming, as well as competition by youth and adults. Admission is free.

The event is also a chance to showcase information about colleges and universities in the area, and to encourage registration for the upcoming fall semester. Classes at WNC begin Monday, Aug. 25.

"Our goal is to get all the Native Americans interested in attending WNC or another college, and to seek higher education," said Lori Pasqua, one of the event organizers who is a Washo tribe member and a WNC student. Head Man of the Pow wow is Ben Rupert of the Duck Valley Shoshone-Paiute tribe; Head Woman is Fawn Pasqua of the Wa-Pai-Shone tribe. Rupert is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, and Pasqua is a graduate of Western Nevada College.

"We want people to come out and enjoy themselves, and check out the arts and crafts, food vendors and the Washoe Room," Lori Pasqua said, where historical documentary films about Native Americans will be shown.

Festivities will begin both days at noon with a grand entry, followed by competitions. Featured food for sale will include Indian tacos, strawberry shortcake tacos, Hawaiian tacos, and hamburgers/hot dogs.

Camping on site is not permitted; the Pow wow's sponsor hotel is Horizon Inn of Gardnerville (www.horizoninn.com).

The event is sponsored by the WNC Tech Prep program/Perkins Grant, Washo Tribe, Tribe, Douglas County Suicide Prevention, and TANF.
