Author Kevin Canty will give a reading from his recent works at the Oats Park Art Center. Canty's seventh book, Everything, a novel, was published in 2010. He is also the author of three previous collections of short stories (Where the Money Went, Honeymoon, and A Stranger In This World) and three novels (Nine Below Zero, Into the Great Wide Open, and Winslow in Love). His short stories have appeared in the New Yorker, Esquire, GQ, Story, the New England Review and elsewhere; essays and articles in Vogue, Details, Playboy, the New York Times and the Oxford American, among many others. He lives and writes in Missoula, Montana, where he teaches in the University of Montana's MFA program.

The Churchill Arts Council will host a reception for the Sierra Great Basin Collection: Selected Works by 45 Artists exhibition on Saturday, August 27, 5 - 7pm at the Oats Park Arts Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

Celebrate summer at Saturday's concert in the park!

The City of Fallon, in cooperation with the Churchill Arts Council, will present a free in-the-park concert with Plena Libre at 7:30 p.m., June 18, on the outdoor stage in Oats Park, in front of the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park Street, Fallon. The Art Center’s Bar and Galleries will be open following the performance.

Plena Libre is a twelve-member ensemble who have received four Grammy nominations and are Puerto Rico’s musical ambassadors to the world. The ensemble of virtuoso musicians are known for their high energy rhythms. They combine a swinging rhythm sections, horns, vocals and dance to create an electrifying stage presentation that is both universally appealing and deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture. Over a fifteen-year, thirteen album career the group has delighted audiences around the world—performing in more than fifteen countries from Morocco to Malaysia, from the Playboy Jazz Festival to the Fez Festival.

This Father’s Day weekend concert is a great opportunity to get together with family and friends and enjoy an evening of outstanding music under the stars. Robert Morrison: Blood Artist in the Wilderness

The Churchill Arts Council opens Blood Artist in the Wilderness, an exhibition of new works by Reno artist Robert Morrison at the Oats Park Arts Center. The artist will give a talk about the exhibition on Saturday, April 9 at 4:00pm, followed by a reception for the artist from 5:00 to 7:00pm. The exhibition will be in the Oats Park galleries through May 24, 2011.

Robert Morrison, a Professor at UNR, has taught sculpture at the university since 1968. Starting in the late 1980s, Morrison began to draw upon art history and rock 'n roll for his sculptural imagery. For this exhibition, he used bronze, wax, wood, and various mixed media to create the large-scale installation that occupies both Oats Park galleries. From the early 1960's, Morrison has exhibited his sculpture widely throughout the Western states and especially in Nevada and California.

Aquila Theatre's A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Churchill Arts Council will present Aquila Theatre’s new production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, on Saturday, April 2nd, at 8:00 p.m. in the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Aquila Theatre is a classically trained, modernly-hip troupe based in New York. They present an imaginative interpretation of Shakespeare’s timeless comedy, weaving theatrical magic in conjuring an enchanted forest, Athenian courts and a strife-torn fairy kingdom. The Company will also present a free program, “Ancient Greeks/Modern Lives,” part of a national program to inspire people to come together to read, see and think about classical literature, how it continues to invigorate American cultural life. This reading will take place at 3:00 PM at the Art Center and has been made possible by a Chairman’s Special Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities: great ideas brought to life. Lee Brumbaugh is Curator of Photography at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno. His project, "Time in America, Selections 1996-2009," of which eighty-eight images will be on view presents an idiosyncratic and metaphorical look at representations of time as perceived by the photographer.

with Gailmarie Pahmeier & Friends

"The Churchill Arts Council will present a lively panel discussion on the art of creative writing. The session will be led by Gailmarie Pahmeier who teaches the Poetry Workshop at UNR. She will be joined by accomplished creative writing students—both graduates and current enrollees—for a reading and discussion of their works. Linh Cao, Joe Crowley, Nathan Slinker and T.R. Poulson will read, talk about their process, why arts education is important, why poetry is the art they’ve chosen to pursue. Audience members are invited to bring a poem they’ve written to leave with a panel member who will critique the draft and return it by mail."

Eunkang Koh has an MFA from California State University Long Beach, lives in Reno and teaches printmaking and drawing in the art department at the University of Nevada, Reno.
