The Culture of Burning Man Exhibition at WNC

Western Nevada College
2201 W College Parkway
Carson City

Reception for the artists: Thursday, September 15, 5-6:30pm.

Each Labor Day holiday, northern Nevada plays host to one of the largest and most innovative art and cultural events in the nation. Western Nevada College offers a fascinating glimpse into the Burning Man culture of self-expression and self-reliance through a photography exhibit that portrays the art, costumes and ambience of the event. The Culture of Burning Man, in the gallery through October 15, was curated by local artist Maria Partridge. The Black Rock Arts Foundation provided exhibition support.

The thirty-nine poster size photographs depict the innovative sculptures that soar above the playa and depict "burners" in costumes that range from the clever to the weird. The show also features a fascinating array of playa vehicles built or retrofitted to navigate the dusty streets of Black Rock City – from unicycles and roller skates to giant balloons and boats.

The College Gallery is in the Bristlecone Building, at WNC Carson City. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8am - 9pm, and Saturday, 8am - 5pm, excluding holidays. Admission is free.

Great Basin Landscape Inspires Wood Art Exhibit

Western Nevada College
Carson City Campus
WNC Carson City
2201 West College Parkway
Carson City, NV 89703

WNC Galleries
Bristlecone Building

The twisted and weathered woods of the Great Basin environment become imaginative and sometimes whimsical works of art in a new exhibit at the Western Nevada College Main Gallery. Larry Williamson's "Great Basin Work" exhibition will be in the gallery through Friday, March 25.

Williamson's carved creations are fabrications of his mind and his materials - aged pieces of wood found on the floor of the Great Basin. What transpires is an imaginative recount of the landscape that has surrounded him most of his life. For over 58 years, he has explored the Great Basin and High Sierra. He spends his days running the trails near his home and studio in Virginia City.

"It is in this solitude that I hope to find a little mojo to put into my work," he says.
His masterpieces range from raw to polished works, small carvings to life-size interpretations of the textures and life of the basin. A notable piece, "Untitled" bears the talons and feathers of a desert bird and is topped with what may be interpreted as rabbits jumping over the moon. The front depicts the scene of a Native American woman presenting a small man to two intricately carved canines.

WNC Carson City art galleries are located in the Bristlecone Building. Hours: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, with holiday closures. Information: 445-3000.

6 Sides 2 Every Story

Western Nevada College
Main Gallery
Bristlecone Building
Carson City Campus
2201 West College Parkway
Carson City

"More than 500 participants* were asked to illustrate their own perspectives by carving one side of a wooden cube. Each cube represents a current story found in a national/international article, internet posting, or magazine. The culminating project includes artists from the United States, Canada, England and South Africa. Within two years, 95 cubes were carved.

'By sharing a cube consisting of the same story, some artists connected with each other in their communities, while others shared one story with strangers in other places,' Nicol said. 'Participants responded to one another’s marks, their visual images and the initial story.'

The Similar World We Live In
Chris Ryan

"When people think of globalization, they usually think of Americans exporting their television, movies, music, dress and fast food. But globalization means that there is just as much influence coming back to us.

“In the United States the second and third fastest growing religions are Islam and Buddhism,” Western Nevada Geography Professor Chris Ryan says. “In 20 years the dominant language of the Internet will be Chinese. In the mid-'90s, 62 percent of the Internet use was in the United States; now it’s less than 20 percent.”

Since 1992, Ryan has worked for the Education Foundation of the National Geographic Society, and for several years has taught classes on geographic information systems, cultural geography and environmental problems at Western.

“If you look at many cultures around the world in the last 20 years, you see a great number of changes,” Ryan said. “For the past three or four hundred years European culture dominated the United States. After World War II, less than 10 percent of our immigration has come from Europe. Society and culture are going to change, and you’ll see European languages challenged by Arabic and Chinese. If you live in Los Angeles, you can now get 137 different languages via satellite television.

“It may not be a comforting idea to a lot of people, but part of exporting pop culture means there will be reciprocity as well.”
